George Matcha 1912 - 2011

George Matcha PhotoGeorge Matcha, 99, Minot, was reunited with his wife, Stella, Friday, April 8, 2011.

George was born on March 2, 1912, a son of Thomas and Frances (Kotrba) Matcha in Grafton, ND. He was raised and educated in Grafton.

On July 4, 1936, George was united in marriage to Stella Miskavige.  George drove truck for Texaco Oil Company in Grafton and worked for the City of Grafton’s Power Plant.  In 1961, they moved to Minot, where George drove truck for Evans Transfer of Minot and also worked for MonDak Chemical until retirement.

During their retirement years, George and Stella began doing volunteer work at Trinity Health and later Trinity Homes. The couple volunteered at the Trinity Nursing Home Clip and Curl –the beauty/barbershop located there. George escorted the residents from their rooms and Stella worked in the shop. His favorite pastime was helping children from Kids Connection and Trini-tots day care.

They also enjoyed traveling. On their 50th wedding anniversary in 1986, George and Stella traveled to Washington, DC with the 50-plus club from First Western Bank. In 1996, George and Stella received a special anniversary card in the mail from the President of the United States. Stella, George’s wife of 68 years died August 12, 2004.

George was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Minot Moose Lodge, Eagles Club, Knights of Columbus and the A.A.R.P.

He is survived by:   Daughter: Donna Momerak, Minot; sons: Dennis (Cindy) Matcha, Winston, OR, and Duane (Bonnie) Matcha, Albany, NY; 13 grandchildren: Annie K. Matcha, Lisa (Matcha) Merrill, Andy Matcha, Steve Matcha, Gordon Matcha, Scott Matcha, Marlene (Momerak) Aitchison, Merrie Lou (Momerak) Marquardt, Susan (Momerak) Haman, Mark Momerak, Tim Momerak, Phillip Momerak, and Ken Momerak;  18 great-grandchildren: Joe Matcha, Sara Matcha, Hannah Matcha, Adrienne Ann Matcha, George Paul Aitchison, John Aitchison, Kelsey Aitchison, Aaron Marquardt, Rebecca Hoffman, Rachael Zeltinger, Chad Momerak, Sara Momerak, Matt Haman, Luke Haman, Brian Momerak, Chris Momerak, Cody Momerak, and Blake Momerak; 9 great-great-grandchildren: Emily Aitchison, Chase Haman, Dean Marquardt, Jacob Aitchison, Devin Young, Madison Momerak, Hallie Momerak, Courtney Momerak and Trey Edwards;  brother: Lawrence Matcha, East Grand Forks, MN; sister: Henrietta Smith, Crookston, MN; Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

George was preceded in death by his parents, wife Stella, three brothers, Thomas, Theodore and Charles, one sister, Rose, infant sister Amelia and a great-great granddaughter Mercedes.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Trini-Tots daycare, Minot.

Visitation:  Tuesday, April 12, 2011 from 2-7 at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Funeral Service:  Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Homes Chapel, Minot

Burial:  Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Trini-Tots daycare, Minot.

Immediately following the funeral service, please join the family for a time of fellowship in the rear of the chapel.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 3:30. There will be no formal procession.

The Matcha family would like to thank everyone for the many acts of kindness shown to them during this difficult time. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten. May God bless the memory of George.
