Ina Louise Knutson was born May 4, 1912 in Lebanon Township, McHenry County, ND the daughter of Nels and Thea (Brandon) Knutson. She attended school in the Velva Public School System. As a young woman, she worked as a waitress, cook, housekeeper, and governess in the Minot area.

On June 21, 1937, she married Albert Martinson. They made their home in the Sawyer/Velva area where they farmed for several years before moving into Velva. Whenever "the kids and their friends" came home they always had to scan the cupboard for her "baked goodies." Her house was the gathering place on Sundays where she enjoyed cooking for the whole family. She also loved to sew, read and she especially loved to dance. Ina's grandchildren will always remember her as Beste Mor, Norwegian for the best mother.
