She attended school in the Velva Public School System. As a young woman, she worked as a waitress, cook, housekeeper, and governess in the Minot area. On June 21, 1937, she married Albert Martinson. They made their home in the Sawyer/Velva area where they farmed for several years before moving into Velva. They have seven children and her family was her life.
