Sarah Martinsen

Sarah Martinsen PhotoSarah DeWitz Martinsen passed away on March 16, 2010, as a result of injuries from a motor vehicle-pedestrian accident. She was on a “Pay it Forward” tour with the volunteer group Students Today Leaders Forever during a spring break from NDSU where she was a Junior majoring in Sociology. After a day of working with adults with developmental disabilities, which she had referred to as “one of the best days of my life” she was struck by a car while jogging with friends.

Sarah was born in Grand Forks, ND, attended grade school in Moorhead, MN, and graduated with honors from Magic City Campus in Minot in 2007. Upon her graduation from NDSU in 2011 it was her intention to join the Peace Corp to help others.  She was the membership chairwoman of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and had been an exchange student in Leeds, England during the fall semester of 2009.

Sarah had a passion for adventure and had been to 13 different countries and made every effort to envelop herself in the people and cultures wherever she went. Her greatest love was people, from her beloved family whom she held dear; to the countless exceptional friendships that she made everywhere she went. She had a gift for working with others, from the children for whom she babysat, to the young dancers she taught, to people in need. She attended dance school many hours per week while in high school and trained in New York. She performed many times in recitals, programs, and competitions. When time allowed Sarah also enjoyed riding motorcycle, training for Fargo’s ½ Marathon this spring, photography, and volunteering in Fargo’s flood fight, Relay for Life, the Humane Society and countless other causes.

She will be remembered also for her warm personality which mixed an irreverent sense of humor with a deep commitment to values and a strong compassion for social justice.

Sarah was preceded in death by her grandparents, Edwin and Doris DeWitz, grandfather, Henry Martinsen, and her beloved cat, Mitten. She is survived by her sisters, Galit DeWitz and Alexis Martinsen, her parents, Debra DeWitz and Wayne Martinsen, by her cherished friend, Shawn Pearson, as well as her countless other friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Plains Room at the Memorial Union of NDSU on Monday, Mar. 22nd from 6-8 pm.

The Memorial Service
will be held at First Lutheran Church in Minot on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 2:00 PM.

Visitation
for close friends and family from noon to 2:00 pm at the Parish Center located directly east of First Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family will be establishing an endowment from which scholarships will be awarded to students who serve others.  Contributions can be made to the Sarah Martinsen Memorial Fund at NDSU, either directly or through the family.
