Herbert E. R. Markwardt
1912 - 2005 Herbert E. R. Markwardt, 93, Minot formerly of Makoti, died Saturday, October 29, 2005, in a Minot nursing home. Herbert Edwin Raymond Markwardt was born on July 9, 1912, the son of Fred and Lydia (Klebaum) Markwardt on the family farm, rural Rock Lake, North Dakota. He was raised on the family farmstead, located in Mountrail Township of Mountrail County, south of Makoti, ND. He was educated at Mountrail Consolidated School, and attended Makoti High School. As a young adult, he assisted his parents with the operation of the family farm. He later attended the ND State College of Science in Wahpeton, and then worked at Fort Peck as a general laborer on the dam. He moved to Oaksdale, WA, and worked as a mechanic for Fanning Implement. Herb was united in marriage to Genevieve Frye on September 29, 1936, in Spokane, WA. During the war, he went to work at Geiger Field in Spokane for a short time. They moved back to North Dakota in 1945, and made their home on the Markwardt family farm where they farmed small grains. He retired from farming in 1974. They continued to reside on the farmstead until 1978, when they moved into Makoti. During this time, they wintered in Mesa, Arizona, for several years. In 1999, they purchased a condo in Minot, and kept their home in Makoti as well. They resided there until 2002, when they moved into Edgewood Vista. In July of 2005, Herb moved into ManorCare Health Services. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Makoti, and was a member of the Pioneer Senior Citizens and Makoti Threshers. He was also a member of the Minot Moose Lodge. He had attended Christ Lutheran Church in Minot. He enjoyed horseshoe pitching, dancing, woodworking, reading, playing pool, and loved to sing and listen to music. Surviving family includes: wife of 69 years, Genevieve,

Herbert (Jen) Markwardt, Kathy (Steve) Barron, Joe Markwardt
and his fiancé, Erin, Ruth Markwardt, Beverly (Jim) Byers,
and Mark Stafslien; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Nadine Bergman,
Grass Valley, CA; sisters-in-law, Gwen Frye, Makoti, and Helen
Frye, Moscow, ID; aunt, Erna Coplan, Cando, uncle, Awald Markwardt;
many nieces, nephews, and cousins; Herbert was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral: Friday, November 4, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at
Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot, ND. |
