Genevieve Myra Frye was born June 29, 1913, a daughter of Gus and Elizabeth (Youngs) Frye, on the family homestead located in Hiddenwood Township of Ward County, ND, on what was formerly the Ft. Berthold Reservation. Genevieve was thought to be the first white child born on the reservation. She was raised on the family homestead and educated in Makoti, graduating as an honor student from Makoti High School in 1930. She then attended one summer at Minot Normal School.

Genevieve taught at one of the Hiddenwood country schools for a few years until moving to Spokane, Washington. Genevieve was united in marriage to Herbert E.R. Markwardt September 29, 1936, in Spokane, WA. They made their home in Spokane until moving back to North Dakota in 1945, where they lived on the Markwardt family farmstead located in Mountrail Township of Mountrail County, southwest of Makoti, ND, and farmed small grains. As a farm wife, she spent many summers gardening and canning and at Christmas time, always baked and decorated Christmas cookies for the local children. They retired from farming in 1974, but continued to reside on the farm until 1978, when they moved to Makoti. They traveled throughout the United States and Canada, and spent 25 winters in Mesa, AZ. They made many new friends from all over and enjoyed playing cards and dancing. They returned every summer to their home in Makoti. In 1999, they bought a condominium in Minot as a winter home and kept summering in Makoti until 2000. They continued to reside at the condo until 2002, when they moved to Edgewood Vista. Herb passed away October 29, 2005. Genevieve continued to reside at Edgewood Vista until 2008, when she moved to the Rockview Good Samaritan Home in Parshall. In January of 2011, she moved to the Semmen Adult Foster Care Home in Ryder.

She was a charter member of the Mountrail County Homemakers Club and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Makoti, and active in its ladies aid. She was a member of the Makoti Pioneer Senior Citizen Center and the Makoti American Legion Auxiliary.
