Donald Frederic Marfell
1926 - 2004 Donald was born August 11, 1926 to Fred and Martha Marfell of Peoria, Illinois. He grew up in the Peoria and Pekin Illinois areas, and attended Woodruff High School. He then worked for a time as a bellhop at the Pere Marquette Hotel in Peoria. He served in the United States Navy for a short time and was honorably discharged in 1946. Don was then employed as an electrician for Caterpillar Tractor Company at the research center in Mossville, Illinois where he worked for 35 years until retiring in 1981. Following retirement he worked at Morton Auto Auction for ten years. Donald married Alberta Mary Keyes of Pekin, Illinois on August 28, 1948. They resided in Peoria for a few years before moving to Sunnyland, Illinois, where they lived until a couple of years ago, when they moved to Minot, to be near their family. Don was very active in the Sunnyland community throughout his life. He was a member of the Lions Club, and established the local girl's fastpitch softball association, creating an athletic program for girls ranging in age from 8 to 18, where none existed before. He also coached a girl's softball team for five years. He was a member of Sunnyland Christian Church for 42 years. During this time he served on the church council for several years, as well as serving as a deacon and an elder, and he sang in the church choir. Don loved music and sang in several school district variety shows. He loved camping and loved to help people. Survivors: Wife, Alberta M. Marfell, Minot; daughters, Jan (Rick) Hartle, Grano, ND, and Joan (John) Caughron, Chanhassen, MN; three grandchildren, Jimmy, Jennifer and Jeremy Caughron; sister, Sharon Bennett and family of Rohnert Park, California. Don was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Jonathan Caughron; his parents, Fred and Martha Marfell, and an infant brother. Funeral: Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at the Pioneer Chapel at First Lutheran Church, Minot, ND. Visitation: Saturday, March 20, 2004, from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the church. Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
