Mary Sue Meehl was born September 6, 1932, a daughter of Percy and Edna (Hamann) Meehl, in New Ulm, Minnesota.  She was raised and educated in Marshall, Minnesota, graduating from Marshall High School in 1950.

After her high school graduation, she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she graduated with an associate’s degree in 1952. She then attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1954. That fall, she began teaching elementary school in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Mary married attorney Mitchell Harris Mahoney April 21, 1956, in Marshall, Minnesota. They made their home in Mandan, ND, where she taught kindergarten. In 1957, they moved to Minot. They had two daughters, Meg, who was born in 1957, and Kate, who was born in 1960. Mitchell passed away February 19, 1996.

After her husband’s death, Mary continued to live in Minot. In 2004, she began wintering in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, where she attended Living Lord Lutheran Church.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and for many years sang in its choir; the Minot Country Club; and was the first woman to serve on the board of the Minot YMCA. She was also a member of the Delta Delta Delta alumnae association.

In the early 1960s, Mary was active in the effort to add kindergarten to the Minot school system. She was an avid golfer and helped organize many golf tournaments and events. She enjoyed cards and was a skilled bridge player.

Her loving family includes: daughters, Meg (Mike Connelly) Mahoney, Sarasota, FL, and Kate Mahoney, London, England; grandchildren, Kate and Erin Connelly; and Tara, Kelsey, Claire, and Haley Sheehan; sister, Jean Altman, Naples, FL; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mitchell; and an infant son, Paul Mitchell Mahoney.

Funeral: Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment:
  Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.

Visitation: 
Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
