Leo Patrick "Bud" Mahoney Jr. 1930- 2011

Leo Mahoney PhotoLeo P. Mahoney Jr., 80, Minot, died Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in a Minot hospital.

Leo was born on October 14, 1930, to Leo Patrick Mahoney Sr. and Bernice Viola (Hankla) Mahoney in Minot, ND.  He was raised and educated in Minot Public Schools.  He moved with his parents to Williston, ND where he graduated from Williston High School in 1948.

Leo joined the United States Air Force and served in Buloxi Mississippi in 1948 and 1949.  He returned to ND to attend NDSU in Fargo for 2 years in Electrical Engineering.  He then returned to Williston where he met Phoebe Saunders.  They were married on February 16, 1953 in Minot, ND Leo Mahoney Older photoand together they had 3 children.

They moved to East Glacier National Park with the Great Northern Railroad and was employed in maintenance at the East Glacier Hotel.  He then joined Eds, Hoken and Galvin which took them to Cheyenne, Wyoming, Sedalia, Missouri and Lewistown, Montana.

They returned to Minot after the 1969 flood where he worked for his uncle Walter Hankla at Brays Cleaners.  He then worked at I. Keating Furniture for a short time as a warehouse supervisor.  He gained employment with Minot Public Schools as supervisor of buildings and grounds from 1970 to 1990.  He then returned to driving bus for Minot Public Schools and Northland Bus Company until retiring in March, 2011.  Phoebe passed away on October 10, 1994.  He married Joanne Goerndt on November 23, 1998 and resided in Minot.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing billiards with friends at the Minot Elks Club and his many pets.

He is survived by his daughter Kathleen (Charles) Lovejoy, son Robert, grandson Scott (Melissa) Lovejoy and Great-grand-daughter Paige Lovejoy.  He is also survived by his wife Joanne, step-daughters Julie (Tim) Petz, Jeni Goerndt (Shane Parsons), step-grandchildren Levi (Whittney) Buechler, Amber (Tyler) Emerson, Dylan Parsons and Jackson Goerndt, several aunts, uncles, cousins and one brother-in-Law and his two cats Rebel and Pepper.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Phoebe, son Patrick Ward and mother-in-law Catherine Saunders.

Memorials are preferred to the Souris Valley Humane Society.
