Robert J. Lyon 1925 - 2003

Robert J. Lyon, 77, 109 18th St. NW, Minot, died Monday, December 1, 2003, in a Roseville, CA, nursing facility.

Robert was born December 20, 1925, in Minot, ND, the son of Alex and Dena (Knapp) Lyon. He was raised and educated in Minot and graduated from St. Leo's High School. Following graduation he entered the United States Navy, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theater. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Minot.

Robert married Bonnie Miller on June 28, 1947, at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot. Robert hired out with the Great Northern Railway, which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad, starting as a brakeman and working his way to conductor, a position he retired from after for 42 years of service.

Robert served as secretary treasurer for the United Transportation Union, Local 1059, and was elected three times to attend the national convention in Miami Beach, FL. Robert was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot. He was a lifetime member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge. He was a member of the American Legion and the Last Man's Club, and a former member of the Eagles Aerie, Moose Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus, all of Minot. Robert was involved in state politics and was a staunch Democrat. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and looked forward to fishing trips in Canada every June with his buddies.

Robert is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bonnie, of Minot; son, Michael (Joan) Lyon, Roseville, CA; daughters, Nancy (John) Holland, Palm Desert, CA, Shelley (Dean) Atkinson, Oakes, ND, Lori Lyon (Andrew) Olson, Madison, WI; nine grandchildren, Tami Jean, John Robert, Sheri Lil, Robert Joseph, Michael David, Jesse Dean, Whitney Lee, Emily Margaret and August Peter; one great-grandson, Jonathan; mother-in-law, Lilly Miller Bakken, Minot; brother-in-law, Virgil (Dorothy) Miller, and two sisters-in-law, Mavis Lyon and Gloria (Jim) West, all of Minot; numerous nieces and nephews survive. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Thomas, two infant sisters; brothers, James, Edward and William Lyon.

Robert was loved by his family who remembers him as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Memorial Mass: Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot, ND.

Visitation and Rosary Recitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register, Monday, December 8, 2003, from noon to 7:00 p.m., with rosary recitation Monday at 7:00 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial: A private burial will be held at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
