Katherine Lukach 1920 - 2009 Katherine Schmaltz was born September 10, 1920, on a farm northwest of Balfour, ND, a daughter of Michael and Caroline (Brosart) Schmaltz. She was educated in a rural school in Odin Township, McHenry County. She lived on the farm with her five sisters. Together, they did lots of field work with their dad, with horses, and later years with tractors. Katherine started working at the Drake bank, and later transferred to the First National Bank in Bottineau. She worked in Bottineau for six years, before transferring to First National Bank in Minot, where she worked until 1955. On October 5, 1955, she was united in marriage to Stephen D. Lukach, in St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot. They made their home on a farm near Noonan, ND. The house they lived in was built by Stephen. They farmed there for four years, but do to poor crop yields, moved to Minot. Their house, which was built by Stephen, was moved to Minot, where together, they raised their two children, Michael John and Gregory Steven. Katherine was a charter member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. She was also a member of Prime America. Katherine was known for her "green thumb", as she could get anything to grow, and had a love for plants and flowers. Most of all, she had a strong love for her family. Her loving family includes: husband of 53 years, Stephen, Minot; sons, Michael (Dorothy Kjellberg) Lukach, Minot and Gregory (Licia Dilley) Lukach, Mahomet, IL; two grandchildren Noah and Kaycee Lukach; sister, Sophie Kuntz, Drake; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Marie Eva Schmaltz, Caroline Schmaltz, and Frances Schmaltz. Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, July 31, 2009 at
