Esther M. Lucht, 88, Minot, formerly of Newburg and Russell, ND, died Monday, July 14, 2008 in a Minot nursing home.

Esther Marie Hermel was born October 3, 1919 in Onamia, MN the daughter of Fred and Emma (Schultz) Hermel. As a young child she moved with her parents to North Dakota and was raised and educated in the Newburg, ND area.

On October 13, 1936 Esther married Arnold Lucht at St. John's Lutheran Church, Russell, ND. Following their marriage they lived and farmed near Russell. Arnold passed away in August of 1979. Following his death Esther moved into Newburg. In 1988 she moved to Minot, and in 2006 she moved into ManorCare Health Services.

While living on the farm, Esther was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Russell and the Women's Lutheran Missionary League. In Minot she was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Esther loved bowling and she loved gardening and canning. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle and whist. She made several trips into Canada, where she and Arnold enjoyed fishing with family and friends. Esther's greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she deeply loved and was very proud of. "Grandma Es" was famous for her popcorn balls, fudge, and chicken soup, which were always requested by her fans at any family event. She was a wonderful lady who will be greatly missed.

Those who shared in her life, children, Virgil (Mary Sue) Lucht, Tioga, ND and Joyce (Roger) Sand, Minot; eight grandchildren, Father Shannon Lucht, Belfield, ND, Amy (Jake) Bauer, Grand Forks, ND, Andrea (David) Mosbaek of Kansas, Aaron (Naomi) Lucht, Bismarck, ND, Kalen Lucht, Rochester, MN, Mylan (Kristi) Sand, Minot, ND, Bill (Linda) Sand, Burlington, ND and Peter (Tracey) Sand, Moorhead, MN; six great-grandchildren, Quinn and Ian Bauer, Liam Mosbaek, Cameron Lucht, Elizabeth Sand and Sage Sand; sisters, Ruth Weatherhead of Georgia, Irene Kokoschke of Minnesota and Helen Combs of Alabama; brother, Clarence (Helen) Hermel of Georgia; special friend, Mabel Gobbel, Minot; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Alvin and George Hermel.

Funeral: Friday, July 18, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday, from noon to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Friday at 2:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Russell, ND.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Minot, or to an organization of the donor's choice.
