Edward J. Libke 1937 - 2011 Edward was born September 16, 1937 in Lidgerwood, ND to John and Josephine (Enger) Libke. At a young age he moved with his family south of Velva, ND and attended Truax-Traer School. He entered the United States Navy on October 19, 1954 and served during the Korean Conflict on the USS Epperson. He was honorably discharged on August 7, 1958 and returned to North Dakota. He then attended school in Fargo. On May 29, 1961, Edward married Marlys Hendrickson in Dilworth, MN. They made their home in various cities in the United States, where his work took him, and eventually settled in Velva. Edward worked at Minot Sand and Gravel for several years, and then went to work at the Velva Mine, where he was a mechanic and welder, until his retirement. His wife Marlys passed away on November 19, 1996. Edward was a life-time member of the Velva American Legion Post #39 and the United Mine Workers. In his spare time he enjoyed doing mechanic work and welding. Those who shared in his life, sons, John Libke and Edward A. (Stacy) Libke, all of Velva; daughters, Dardette Libke, Minneapolis, MN, and Anita (Joe) Zietz, Velva; grandchildren, Benjamin and Lindsey and was a grandfather figure to many others; sister, Josephine (Duane) Teigen, Hazen, ND; brothers-in-law, Marlin “Bob” (Leona) Smestad, Minot, and Lyle (Liz) Hendrickson, Velva; numerous nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys; his parents, John and Josephine, and step-father, Norman Nelson and many special friends. Funeral service: Monday, January 31, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, ND. Visitation: Sunday, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva, ND. Burial: Velva Cemetery, Velva, ND in the spring. Officiant: Rev.
