Edmond C. Leonard 1935 - 2003

Edmond C. Leonard, 68, 902 3rd Ave. NW, longtime Minot architect, died Saturday, December 27, 2003, in his home, of natural causes.

He was born on May 29, 1935, in Bottineau, ND, to Edward C. and Edna (Lilleby) Leonard. He attended and graduated from Dunseith High School in 1953. He earned an associate engineering degree at what is now Minot State University - Bottineau. He continued his education at North Dakota State University, Fargo, where he received his bachelor's degree in architecture. He married Alice G. Vandal in Dunseith, ND, on July 26, 1958. He worked for Harold Bechtel in Fargo. Ed and Alice moved to Minot, where he worked for Kielhack and Fougner, Architects, later becoming partner in the firm. In 1970, he established his own firm, Edmond C. Leonard, Architect, and later renamed the business to Edmond C. Leonard and Associates. He operated the business until his retirement in 2000.

He attended Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, and served the state chapter as past president and treasurer. He was past chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, Tomahawk District, Northern Lights Council in Minot, and was a Silver Beaver Award winner. He was past president of Little Flower School Parent Teacher Association, and held a life membership in the City of Minot PTA. He was past president of the Jaycees and Lions Club, both of Minot. He was secretary for the Minot Vocational Workshop Board and was on the MSU Board of Regents at the time of his death.

Ed's grandchildren were his greatest joy. His enthusiasm for games encouraged him to create and patent his own board game, QUADS. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and family, teaching them how to play various games. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his bountiful harvest with others.

Memorials are preferred to Little Flower Catholic Church or the Minot Catholic Schools.

Survivors: wife, Alice G. (Vandal) Leonard, Minot; two sons, David (Donna) Leonard, Fargo, and John Leonard, Minot; four daughters, Tracy (Daniel) Christen, Minot, Lori (Joseph) Hurly, Sioux Falls, SD, Kelly (David) Hendershot, Minot, and Amy (Michael) Leonard-Emery, San Francisco, CA; 17 grandchildren, Kacy (Matthew) Ferrara, Ryan, Jenny, Heidi and Tyler Christen, Erin, Adam, Sam and Keith Hurly, Chauncy and Seth Hendershot, Robert, Edward and Estelle Emery, and Lindsey, Lance and Luke Leonard; four brothers, William (Lorette) Leonard, Mt. Lake Terrace, WA, Robert (Donna) Leonard, Lowell Leonard, and John (Judy) Leonard, all of Dunseith; sister, Janice Workman, Auburn, WA; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. His parents, brother, Ernest, and sister, Corrine Leonard, preceded him in death.

Mass of Christian Burial: Wednesday, December 31, 2003, 1:30 p.m., at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Visitation: Tuesday, December 30, 2003, from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and at the church prior to the prayer service.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
