It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bert W. Leidholt on April 1, 2007 at the age of 71.

Bert was born on November 13, 1935 in Bowdle, SD, a son of Henry and Lydia (Schlepp) Leidholt. He grew up in Bowdle and after graduating from high school he attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, where he was a prominent member of the football team and a standout on the track team. He was inducted into the Northern State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993. He went on to obtain a Masters Degree from Northern Arizona University.

After teaching and coaching in Lemmon, SD and at Minot's Bishop Ryan High School, Bert became a football and track coach at Minot State University in 1969. He was the head football coach from 1975 to 1981. He helped coach the Beavers to ten conference championships and two trips to the National Playoffs, in 1970 and 1992. Bert also taught physical education courses at Minot State. He retired from football coaching in 1992 but continued teaching until 1998. He was inducted into the Minot State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.

Recently, Bert came out of retirement to assist in the coaching of Junior High football at Bishop Ryan High School.

Bert was not only devoted to his family, but also to his friends, his faith and the Green Bay Packers. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren whom he adored.

Bert loved life, approaching everything with such enthusiasm that he inspired everyone around him to enjoy it in the same way. He will be missed not only by his family and the community of Minot, but by the many formers players and students who he influenced throughout his coaching and teaching career. This is evidenced by the tremendous support shown to his family throughout this difficult time.

His memory and love will be cherished by the love of his life, his wife Virginia (Bachman) whom he married on June 3, 1957 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Bowdle SD. Blessed to be his children are Dave (Jeanie) Leidholt of Missoula, MT; Kay (Brent) Molnar of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada: Michelle (John) Hennessy of Cheney, WA and Dan (Maria) Leidholt of Minot, ND. His beloved grandchildren include Shea Lachman, Alec Tripp, Isaak Leidholt, Cole, Laurin and Tatum Leidholt, Logan and Haylie Hennessy, Derek and Rachel Molnar. Bert is also survived by his brother Jerry (Corrine) Leidholt of Pierre, SD and his sisters Mabel Schumacher of Pierre, SD, Lucille Schaible who lives in Minnesota and Janice (Dan) Bergeson of Fort Pierre, SD.

Bert's memory will live on as do those who preceded him in death, including his parents, brothers, Ted and Rueben Leidholt, sisters Bernice Lindbloom, Vivian Schumacher and Shirley David and grandchildren Carlin and Carter Leidholt.
