Shirley D. Larson 1929- 2010 Shirley D. Larson, 80, Minot, ND, died Tuesday, June 1, 2010, in a Minot hospital.
Shirley D. Liebel was born July 18, 1929, a daughter of Walter and Valjer (Danielson) Liebel, on the family farm near Carpio, ND. She was the youngest of five children. She was raised on the family farm before moving with her family into Carpio, where she attended middle school. Shirley graduated from Carpio High School in 1947, as the only graduate that year. She then graduated from Christie’s Beauty School in Bismarck. She then worked as a beautician in Kulm with her sister Eleanor and later in Crosby, ND, before moving to Minot, where she then worked as a waitress at the Spudnut Shop, which was owned by her sister and brother-in-law, Ardis and Leonard Larson. Shirley married Allen O. Larson August 12, 1950, at First Lutheran Church in Minot. They made their home in Minot, where Allen operated Northwest Photoengravers. Shirley was an excellent homemaker and great cook who also found time to help out in the family-owned printing business. In 1985, she also became bookkeeper for the family's United Mailing Services. During all of these years, she kept up her beautician license. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Minot, where she was active in the womens group, and delivered recorded sermons to members who were shut-ins. She was a charter member of LaSertoma Club, a Girl Scout Brownie leader, member Scandinavian Heritage Association, Thor Lodge Sons of Norway, and Guardian supporter of Norsk Høstfest. Bowling was one of Shirley's favorite activities, where she made many friends. She won singles first place in the women’s city tournament in 1973 and competed in National Women’s Bowling tournaments in Milwaukee in 1977 and Tucson in 1979. Shirley enjoyed counted-cross-stitch and made many beautiful pictures. One of her outings was the weekly lunches with her sisters and mother. She loved animals, especially her cats, Her loving family includes: husband of 59 years, Allen; daughters, Valerie (Ron) Smith, and Diana Jean Larson; son, Sheldon Larson; grandsons, Dustin Smith and Shawn Smith; sister, Eleanor Lee, all of Minot; sister-in-law, Della Wilhelm, Surprise, Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her beloved cats, Rusty and Dusty. Funeral: Saturday, June 5, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot. Following the funeral service, cremation will take place. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Visitation: Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Memorials: are preferred to Scandinavian Heritage Association, Souris Valley Animal Shelter or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
