Alf Larsen, 98, Granville, ND, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at Souris Valley Care Center, Velva.

Alf Krybelsrud was born June 20, 1910, a son of Adolf and Emma (Martinsdatter) Krybelsrud, near Skarnes, Norway. He was educated and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Norway. At the age of eight, he made his home with a neighbor family. It was there he learned to make wooden items on the turning lathe. At the age of fourteen, he returned home and helped his father and brothers with their logging business.

Alf always had a dream of coming to the United States, so at the age of nineteen, he left Norway to come to America. He landed at Ellis Island and it was there he changed his name from Alf Krybelsrud to Alf Larsen, taking his grandfathers name. He came to Chicago, IL, to spend some time with an aunt and uncle. There was no work to get in Chicago, so he came to North Dakota, to the John Odland farm. He worked for farmers in the area. In 1934, Alf became a United States Citizen.

In 1935, he returned to Chicago, found work but after a few months his love for the country won him over and he returned to North Dakota to go into partnership with Emil Everson in a cattle and sheep farm.

On September 20, 1941, he married Agnes L. Swensrud. In 1941, he sold his interest in the ranch and they moved to the Olaf Tansem farm, east of Karlsruhe. In 1943, he purchased the Lena Stalheim farm, north of Verendrye, and they moved there. In 1947, he then purchased the Sam Coto farm, three miles east and they moved there.

He farmed and raised cattle there, until 1964, when they moved into Granville. In 1965, he began employment with Hutton Construction. He retired in 1982.

He enjoyed fishing and had made many trips to the west coast in March and April to fish for Salmon. He always loved to travel and made many trips to Norway with his children and grandchildren. His pastimes included, fishing, ice fishing, hunting, trapping, card playing and spending time with grandchildren.

He was a former member of Norway Lutheran Church, rural Denbigh, and currently was a member of First Lutheran Church, Granville. Alf was quite active in school and church activities. He was also ready to help anyone in need.

His loving family includes: wife of 67 years, Agnes, Granville; children, Virginia (Carl) Myers, Beavercreek, OR, Ralph (Joanne) Larsen, Granville, John (Carleen) Larsen, Granville, and Kathleen Brewer, St. Petersburg, FL, grandchildren, Paul Myers, Annette Haefs, Brad Myers, and Cathy Auer; Jackie Morrison, Kevin Larsen, Courtney Larsen and Hailey Bachmeier; Douglas Larsen, Peggy Jean Larsen, Rebecca Hoglund, and Danielle Larsen; Donavan Hamm, and Shawn, Jeremy, and Ryan Brewer; 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
