Devane married Floy Loretta Strain on June 29, 1949, at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. From this marriage, their three children, Melody, Laurel, and Darwin, were born. After many years, they divorced.

He worked in the heat plant at Minot State College, Northern States Power Co., City Plumbing and Heating, White's Creamery, and medically retired from the Minot Air Force Base Commissary.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Eagles Aerie, Minot.

Devane was a caring soul who always found time to do chores for ill elderly neighbors, and relatives; visited shut-in friends, and was recognized in 2003 as volunteer of the year for ManorCare Nursing Home. He remembered all his sisters, brothers, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews with a birthday card every year. He was often seen at the Parker Senior Center as the self appointed door opener and greeter.

Devane always smoked a pipe, wore a hat, and his cowboy boots. He loved music and with a twinkle in his eye loved to dance. He was fondly remembered for piping Christmas music during the holidays outside his home located in the North Star Trailer Park.
