William "W.O" Krumwiede
William Otto Krumwiede was born November 20, 1916, the son of William F.C. and Frederica (Bohner) Krumwiede on the family farm in Lebanon Township of McHenry County, near Voltaire, ND. He was raised near Voltaire and attended the Voltaire School through the eighth grade. At the age of 17, he left home and rode a freight train to Montana, where he took a job on a large ranch in Shelby. He returned in 1938, and helped run his parents farm. W.O. married Ellen A. Roberts of Maxbass, ND, October 12, 1940, in Bottineau, ND. They made their home on the Krumwiede family farm near Voltaire. On September 4, 1942, he volunteered for the United States Navy. He received his training at the Naval Base in Detroit, Michigan, and was then sent to Panama for additional training. He was then stationed at Miami, FL, for eight months, where Ellen and their two sons, Joe and Bill, were able to join him. He traveled to New York and boarded the PGM-26 and went to Japan. He was present when General Douglas MacArthur signed the Peace Treaty with Japan. William was honorably discharged October 15, 1945, as a First Class Gunner's Mate. Following his discharge from the US Navy, he and Ellen bought a farm two miles east of his father's homestead. They farmed and raised cattle, and retired from farming in 1981. William and Ellen lived on the farm for 59 years and in 2004, they moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living, Minot. W.O. collected antiques, guns, Rumely Oil Pulls, John Deere tractors, antique cars, and traps. Every summer and fall he enjoyed traveling to many of the area and regional threshing shows. He was an avid reader of western novels. W.O. was known by several nicknames, including Rumely Bill, Trapper Bill, and Bill the Gun Trader. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, was a lifetime member of the American Legion Joseph I. Weller Post #39, Velva, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9316, Karlsruhe. He had been active in the Voltaire community and served on the Voltaire School Board, and the Lebanon Township Board. He was also a member of the Drake Threshing Association. His loving family includes: wife of 66 years, Ellen, Minot; three sons, Joseph, Crary, ND, William D. (Jackie), Voltaire, ND, and James, Minot; two daughters, Jean, Minot; and Mary Ann (Dean) Peterschick, Surrey; six grandchildren, Jessica (Mike) Weigel, Devils Lake, ND, Tim (Denise) Krumwiede, Velva, ND, William (Julie) Krumwiede, West Fargo, ND, Steve (Rachael) Hundley, S. St. Paul, MN, Michael Hundley, Minot, Lisa McClanahan, Minot; and eleven great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Madison, and Allen Weigel; Sonja and Kaia Krumwiede; Danya (Robby) Brown, Samantha and William Krumwiede V; and Justice, Trevon, and Jada McClanahan; sister-in-law, Irene Krumwiede, Voltaire; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. William was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Jeanette (DeCoteau) Krumwiede; brothers, Edward, Carl, and Delbert; and sisters, Ellen Krumwiede, Louise Colby, and his twin sister, LaVina Grindberg.
