Delbert V. Krumwiede 1918 - 2003


Delbert V. Krumwiede, 85, Voltaire, ND, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at Souris Valley Care Center, Velva, ND.

Delbert was born on November 16, 1918, on the family farm, in Lebanon Township, McHenry County, near Voltaire, ND, to William and Fredarica (Bohner) Krumwiede. He was raised near Voltaire and attended school there through the 8th grade.

Delbert was employed in Montana and Idaho before enlisting in the United States Army in 1941, in Stockton, CA. He served in the 143rd Field Artillery - 40th Infantry Division. He served in Guadalcanal, New Guinea, New Britain and Leyte, Luzon, Penay and Negres. During his three years in the South Pacific, he was on 18 different ships and landing crafts. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant, at Fort McArthur, CA, on September 9, 1945.

Delbert married W. Irene Grindberg on March 27, 1946, and began farming on his father's homestead in April of that same year. He and Irene farmed and ranched near Voltaire his entire life. Although he retired from farming and ranching in 1981, he continued to help with his son's farm work until recently when he was forced to quit due to his health.

Delbert served on numerous boards, including, the Voltaire School District and the Voltaire Farmer's Elevator. For 26 years he served on the South McHenry County Soil Conservation, with four of those years on the ND Soil Conservation Committee. He was president of the ND Irrigation District Association, past commander of the Velva American Legion, Post #39, and held life membership in the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Delbert was past president of the ND Charolais Association and won numerous awards with his Charolais cattle. He was a 55-year member of the ND Stockman's Association. He was member of Hjerdal Lutheran Church, Voltaire, and was presently serving on the Hjerdahl Cemetery board. He collected belt buckles and enjoyed restoring vintage John Deere tractors. Delbert and Irene traveled to south Texas every winter for the past 20 years, where they owned a mobile home and made many friends from the Midwest.

Delbert is survived by his wife, Irene Krumwiede, Voltaire; three sons, Tommy (Linda) Krumwiede, Velva, Terry (Nancy) Krumwiede, Voltaire, and Danny Krumwiede and his special friend, Rhonda Biffert, Hazen, ND; nine grandchildren, David (LuAnn) Krumwiede, Mindy (Rick) Sigvaldsen, Connie (John) Soderholm, Ty Krumwiede and his fiancé, Danette Neift, Bryan (Mandie) Krumwiede, Kari Rae (Cody) Cadwell, Dana Krumwiede, TiAnna Stevens, and Shannon Just; 12 great-grandchildren, Michael, Mason, Megan, Malorie, Jay, Codi, Morgan, Abby, Seth, Colter, Trey, Tristen; brother, William (Ellen) Krumwiede, Voltaire; sister-in-law, Esther Hage, Longview, WA; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Edward and Carl Krumwiede, and sisters, Louise Colby, LaVina Grindberg and Ellen Krumwiede.

Funeral Service: Monday, December 8, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, ND.

Visitation: Sunday, December 7, 2003, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva, ND.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND.
