Herbert R. "Red"
Knopfle 1917 - 2006 Herbert R. Knopfle was born on August 27, 1917, the son of John and Sofia (Klain) Knoepfle in Turtle Lake, ND. He was raised and educated in Upham. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked near Kenmare and Lake Darling. He was working for Sears in Minot when the United States entered WWII. He was drafted in the US Army on December 21, 1942. In 1943, he began training for motorcycle patrol duty. Red landed in France on June 7, 1944. His duties involved providing security and escort for troop and supply shipments. Red and his Harley Davidson traveled over 110,000 miles in Europe, even escorting The Supreme Allied Commander, General Dwight D. Eisenhower at one time. He was honorably discharged on October 22, 1945. Following WWII, he worked in plumbing, heating and air conditioning. He was part owner of Lane Sheet Metal Company until his retirement in 1982. After dating for 35 years, he married Evelyn Kerzman on August 1, 1981, in Minot. He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #26, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #753, the Eagles Aerie and the Moose Lodge, all in Minot. He also was a life member of the Elks Lodge. Red enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing cards. For many years he entertained family and friends on his houseboat at Lake Sakakawea. Red was a patient and kind husband, uncle, and friend. Surviving family includes: wife, Evelyn, Minot; sisters, Frieda Molina, Lemon Grove, CA; and Minnie Brimhall, Whitefish, MT; sisters-in-law, Rosella Knoepfle, Minot; and Georgette Iverson, Minot; brother-in-law, Glen Karlson, Garrison; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Emil and Willie Knoepfle; sister, Agnes Pace and an infant sister, Verna Knoepfle. Mass of Christian Burial: Wednesday, December 13, 2006,
