Irene Knodel 1929 - 2011

Irene Knodel PhotoIrene Knodel, 82, Minot, ND, died Thursday, June 23, 2011, in a Watford City hospital after being relocated there due to the flood.  

Irene Mehl was born May 3, 1929, a daughter of William and Louise (Ziegler) Mehl, in Strasburg Township of Sheridan County, rural Kief, ND.  She was raised and educated in Kief area and attended Highland School District #26.

Irene married Hilbert Knodel November 18, 1947, in McClusky, ND. They made their home on the Mehl family farm located near Kief, ND for a couple of years before moving to Minot in the early 1950’s. She worked as a cook for various restaurants in Minot, including the Minot American Legion Club, before working as a cook at Trinity Nursing Home for over 25 years. She retired from there in the early 1990’s. Hilbert passed away April 22, 2011.

She loved family events. She enjoyed entertaining, organizing, and planning for these family events. She also enjoyed traveling to see her family, cooking, playing Bingo, and going to the Moose Lodge.

She was a kind hearted, dedicated, strong, independent woman, who was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother. She always put others first, and would help anyone in need.

Surviving family includes:  daughters, Claudia Sveen, Minot, and Charlotte (Bob) Adam, Garrison; grandchildren, Kristen (Drew) Christianson, Minot, Jennifer (Cory) Nielsen, Minot, Tracey (Joe) Rogers, Sacramento, CA, Sara (Jesse) Heredia, Sacramento, CA, and Nick Adam, Minot; great-grandchildren, Lily Christianson, Madelyn Nielsen, Presley and Jake Rogers, and Isabella and Mya Heredia; brothers, Sam Mehl, Minot, Clifford (Caroline) Mehl, Sacramento, CA, and Robert (Carol) Mehl, Minot; and sister, Sue Hennesey, Sacramento, CA; sisters-in-law, Esther Mehl, Drake, and Phyllis Mehl, Bismarck; and a few nieces, nephews and cousins.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hilbert; son-in-law, Bruce Sveen; brothers, Rueben (Gladys) Mehl, Albert Mehl, Fred (Millie) Mehl, Helmer Mehl; sister, Jean Moffitt; brothers-in-law, Harley Hennessey, and Leonard Knodel; and sister-in-law, Esther Rodacker.

Funeral: Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot

Interment:
  Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND.

Visitation: 
Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials
: are preferred to an organization of the donor’s choice.

Immediately following the funeral service, please join the family for a time of fellowship and lunch in the fellowship hall. The graveside service will take place at 12:15 pm. There will not be a formal procession to the cemetery due to safety reasons.

Our family would like to thank all of you for your many acts of kindness. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated during this difficult time. May God bless the memory of Irene.
