Herb A. Kleingartner 1924- 2009 Herbert Alvin Kleingartner was born on a farm south of Mercer, ND to Ed and Bertha (Bender) Kleingartner on April 17, 1924. He attended school in McClusky, ND and achieved his GED certificate in Minot. Herb knew the value of hard work. He worked for Cargill Inc. from 1949-1980 in Sherwood, ND and Minot. He took college courses at Minot State College. In 1980 he obtained his commodities license and began selling commodities for Dean Witter Reynolds. He enjoyed this second career for 10 years. Herb was a great "people person." He managed to meet people he knew or who were related to people he knew wherever he went---from Alaska to a castle in Germany. His girls always tried to hurry him through the state fairgrounds to get to the rides, but were never able to avoid many stops to visit. Herb married Marie Alice Pearson on April 9, 1946. To this union four daughters were born, Gertrude "Trudy", Connie, Shelly and Becky. Herb was a member of Christ Lutheran Church since 1956. He also belonged to Greater Kiwanis and later the Golden Kiwanis where he enjoyed being a loyal bell ringer and an usher for numerous events. Those who shared in his life: Loving wife, Marie, Minot; daughters, Gertrude "Trudy" (Doug) Evenstad, Pierre, S.D., Shelly (Dale) Hanenburg, Manchester, IA and Becky (Greg) Horner, Grand Forks, ND. Herb has five greatly loved grandchildren, Carl (Shannon) Evenstad, Ansel Hanenburg, Jessica (Corey) Haeder, John (Cindy) Hanenburg and Jeff (Brittany) Horner and six and a half great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Art Kleingartner, Fargo, Lindy McCabe, Moorhead, MN, Bella (Jack) McKenzie, Albuquerque, NM, Mary Lou (Dennis) Levin, West Fargo, ND, Frank (Diane) Kleingartner, Issaquah, WA, Ed Kleingartner, Bloomer, WI, Alan (Norma) Kleingartner, West Fargo and sister-in-law, Shirley Kleingartner, Algona, IA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Herb was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Kleingartner; his parents, Ed and Bertha; two sisters, Gertrude and Alice; a brother, Dale; and a sister who died in infancy. Memorial Service: Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, ND. Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register Wednesday, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND at a later date. Any memorials received will be given to the Herb and Marie Kleingartner Scholarship Fund at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot.
