Edward J. Klein 1924 - 2006

Edward J. Klein, 82, rural Sawyer, ND, died Wednesday, December 20, 2006, in a Minot hospital.

Edward James Klein was born on March 20, 1924, the son of John S. and Margaret (Lemer) Klein on his parent's family farm located in McHenry County, rural Karlsruhe, ND. He was the seventh of 16 children. He was raised and educated in the Karlsruhe area. As a young adult, he assisted his parents with the operation of the family farm.

On February 8, 1945, he entered the United States Marine Corps. He served during WWII in the Pacific Area and participated in the Occupation of Japan. He was honorably discharged on October 27, 1946.

Edward was united in marriage to Regina Burckhard on June 22, 1954, in Towner, ND. They purchased a farm north of Sawyer, ND, where they raised small grains.

Ed enjoyed farming, fishing, playing pool, gardening, and doing carpentry work. He especially enjoyed having coffee with buddies at Renee's Corner in Sawyer. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His love was shown in 1970, when he donated one of his kidneys to his son, Michael.

Ed was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery Committee, and the Knights of Columbus, Velva.

Surviving family includes: wife of 52 years, Regina, Sawyer, ND; sons, Bruce Klein, Sawyer; Mark Klein, Sawyer; Aaron Klein and his fiancé, Cindy Hemphill, Minot; daughters, Debbie (Keith) Martin, Minot; and Janice (Jeff) Meyer, Minot; grandchildren, Whitney and Blake Meyer; Kara and Gerard Klein; and Karisa and Kaitlyn Martin; brothers, John (Regina) Klein, Minot; Emanuel (Angela) Klein, Towner, Tedore Daniel Klein, Lisbon, ND, Allen (Elaine) Klein, Norwich, ND, and Cornelius (Cecelia) Klein, Spearfish, SD; sisters, Christine Wald, Fargo, ND, Mary Moreno, Los Angeles, CA, Mathilda (Andrew) Wald, Norwich, Jean Wald, East Grand Forks, MN, and Terri (Bud) Salem, Crookston, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Gerard and Michael J. Klein; sister, Catherine Weist; and brothers, Pius, Sebastian, Alex and Peter Klein.

Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.

Interment: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva, ND.

Visitation: Saturday from Noon to 5 p.m. and on Monday, December 25, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Monday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
