Walter King 1920 - 2002

Walter King, 82, 405 31st Ave SW Lot 51, Minot, formerly of Upham, entered into eternal life on November 27, 2002.

He was born June 21, 1920 in Alliance, Alberta, Canada, the son of Frank and Amanda (Junke) King. His mother died when he was 2 years old. In 1922 he went to live with his Aunt and Uncle John and Helen Neuman west of Upham, where he was raised and he attended school in Pratt Township. He was baptized in 1928 and confirmed in 1935. Following school, he helped on the Neuman farm, until eventually taking over the farming operation.

On October 25, 1941, he married Avis Wagner at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Upham. Avis and Walter made their home, first on the Neuman farm, before building a house in Upham in 1948. In 1956 they moved themselves and the house they were living in, onto the Neuman farmstead. They farmed there until retiring in 1982. In 1997 they moved to Minot where they have since lived.

Walter worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter since 1999 and was named Wal-Mart Associate of the month.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Upham where he held the offices of treasurer and secretary and also served as an elder and trustee. He was also a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot. Walter served on the Farmers Elevator Board, the Pratt Township Board as a supervisor and also on the McHenry County ASCS Committee for 10 years.

Survivors: wife of 61 years, Avis, Minot; daughters, Beverly (David) Schepp, Mandan, ND and Sandy (Vaughn) Burnside, Cedar Rapids, IA; son, Les (Joanne) King, Minot; six grandchildren, Diana (Bryan) Lohstreter, Sara (Monte) Brindle, Melenie (Mike) Krider, Kathryn (Bob) McIlvanie, Todd (Dena) King and Amy (Doug) Miller; 12 great-grandchildren, David and Elizabeth Lohstreter, Heather and Travis Brindle, Madison, Michaela, and Maggie Krider, Gabrielle and Quinn McIlvanie, Layton King and Paxton and Ellie Miller and a close friend, Colleen Holen, Bottineau.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Kenneth, Layton and George King.

Funeral: Monday, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot.

Visitation: Sunday from noon until 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Upham, ND on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
