Bernard Keller 1921 - 2011

Bernard Keller PhotoBernard Keller, 89, Karlsruhe, died Friday, May 27, 2011 in his farm home north of Karlsruhe, ND, less than thirty feet  from where he was born.

Bernard was born on the family farm north of Karlsruhe on September 3, 1921,  a son of John and Ann (Kraft) Keller.  He was raised and educated in Karlsruhe, where he lived his entire life, farming and ranching on the the family farmstead.  He married the former Angeline Black on April 8, 1953 in St. Anselms Catholic Church in Fulda, ND.

Bernard was very active in the Karlsruhe area.  He was a member of the church board at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and   a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles Aerie.  He was a member of the Karlsruhe Senior Citizens and was on the Falsen Township Board for 60 years.   He was a past member of the American Hereford Association.   He liked to play pinochle, visit with friends and going to the casino.  His comfort came in the outdoors, picking June Berries, driving his team of horses to haul  hay for his cows in the winter, or driving around the area to look at crops.  He enjoyed going to bull sales and spent hours in his John Deere tractor feeding cattle.  He especially looked forward to making deer sausage with his family and friends every fall.

Bernard was known for his integrity and honesty.  Friends could always rely on his friendship.  He was a great husband, father and grandfather, blessed with a great sense of humor.  He especially enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren.  He was extremely proud of his Germans from Russia heritage.

Survivors include his wife Angeline; daughters, Karla (Jon) Backes of Minot, ND and Shelley (Doug) Mundahl of Rugby, ND; sons, Galen Keller of Karlsruhe, Glen (Mary) Keller of Eagle River AK and Jerry Keller of Anchorage, AK; grandchildren, Greg (Michelle) Passa, Stephanie (Kent) Reisenauer, Isaiah, Camilla, Grace, Jorden, John, Dakota, Carole, Jesse and Rosie Keller, Lexie, Katelyn and Brieann Backes, and Jacie, Kristen, Reid and Alyson Mundahl; great grandchildren, Emma, Olivia and Jack Passa and Mya and Brady Reisenauer; sister, Martha Wolfe of Seattle, WA; brother, John (Peggy) Keller of Minot; sisters in law, Liz Keller and Caroline Keller.  He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ann Hoffert, Julia Kupser, Mary Schmaltz and Claira Swet; brothers, Tony Keller, Fred Keller and August Keller; sister in law, Tillie Keller; brothers in law, Tony Hoffert, Mike Kupser, Jim Schmaltz and Russel Swet.

Funeral:  Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe, ND.

Visitation:  Tuesday, May 31, 2011 from noon until 3:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: 
Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe.

Burial:  Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Karlsruhe.
