Gladys V. Kallestad • 1919 - 2010 Gladys Verney Ophaug was born May 6, 1919 in Nelson County, North Dakota, to Nels and Maria Ophaug. She grew up on the family farm near McVille with her three sisters and six brothers. She married Roy Kallestad on November 19, 1952 in Michigan, ND. They farmed near Plaza before moving to Binford in 1957. They lived briefly in Garrison before returning to the family farm north of Plaza in 1963, where they farmed for many years. Friends and neighbors were always welcome at the Kallestad farm, where the coffee pot was always on and Gladys was happy to serve her homemade pie or cookies. Following Roy’s death in 2000, Gladys lived in Willmar, Minnesota, before moving to Minot in 2003. Gladys loved to cook and bake, and made holidays memorable with her delicious Norwegian cookies. She sewed and crocheted numerous quilts and afghans, which she gave to family and friends. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and sense of humor. She is survived by her sons, John (Bonny) and Rodney (special friend Kathy), her daughters, Karen (Dean) and Judy, and a grandson, Les (Heather).
