Robert J. Johnson • 1932 - 2011

Robert Joseph Johnson, 79, Minot died September 1, 2011 at home from Pancreatic Cancer with his family at his side.
               
Robert was born on July 16, 1932 in Aurelia, ND, a son of Leo Elnie and Mary (Menize) Johnson.  He was reared in the Donnybrook area; he started school at the age of five so his sister Margaret wouldn’t be the only girl at their rural one room school house.  He later attended school at St. Agnes Academy Catholic School in Kenmare, ND.  Robert took many college classes during his years on the Minot Police Department.

Robert entered the Navy on July 18, 1949 and served for 4 years on the U.S.S. Roanoke CL 145 Light Cruiser.  He’s been in 25 countries and 46 states. He was honorably discharged April 21, 1953. 
               
Robert married Genevieve Kathleen Loughead on March 16, 1954 in Minot at the Nazarene Church. They made their home in Minot for 23 years where Robert was on the Minot Police Department and he retired in 1976 after 21½ years. Then they could finally live outside of Minot and purchased their home in South Prairie.  Bob retired for the 2nd time from the Teamsters Union, he drove truck for many area trucking companies. When he retired he was driving for Lewis Trucking. 
               
Robert loved his houseboat that he and the family built in their back yard in 1974.  He was a member of the Garrison Boat and Barge Club for many years until they purchased property north of Camp of the Cross and the YMCA camp.  He enjoyed years of boating with his family and friends. Robert was an avid deer hunter and took his family hunting for over 55 years.  This year he won the Elk drawing that he has applied for over 40 years.
               
Robert was a member of Our Redeemers Church in Minot, Dakota Cruisers and Magic City Antique Car Club, Moose Lodge, Eagles, American Legion, Lifetime member - DAV, American Hunting, Fishing and Rifle Clubs, the National Hunting and Rifle Clubs.  He enjoyed playing Sequence with friends and family.
               
Robert is survived by his wife Gen of 57 years. Their children Deb and Bill Shughart and their children Shondell, Mark and Lane Shughart of Casper, WY. Connie Jo Parrow of Minot, her son Cory Syverson of Fargo. Joni and Jerry Anderson of Granville, and her son Bobby Brunner and Katie Lee their son Kaden Brunner of Minot and his son Ethan Hoppe of Garfield, MN, Josh Anderson Portland, OR and Shane (Monica) Anderson of Granville. Steve and Linda Johnson their sons Shane Johnson and his fiancée Megan Kinney, Sheldon Johnson and his son Ryder Smith-Johnson of Minot. Kathy and Darin Ball their children Bonnie (Clouse) and JT Birkle and their sons JJ and Austin of San Antonio, TX., Thomas Ball of Casper, WY; sister Mary Jo (Harold Jr) Sanders and family of Minot, sister-in-law Fran Johnson and family of Minot.  Sister-in-law Leona McDaniel and her family of Columbia, MO and Sister-in-law & brother-in-law Ann & Roger Johnson and their family of Minot. Brother-in-law Ken Loughead of Minot.  Several Aunts, Uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
               
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Lexi Marie Shaw-Johnson, Parents Leo and Mary Johnson, infant sister Joan Marie Johnson, brother Elnie (Shag) Johnson and sister & brother-in-law Margaret & Ken Reichenberger. His mother & father-in-law Ruth & Ernest Loughead.

Graveside service: Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 10 am at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND
