Charles A. "Chuck"
Johnson 1923 - 2004 Charles A. Johnson, 81, 1825 5th St SW, died Friday, August 27, 2004 in a Minot Hospital as results of a heart attack. Charles Arthur Johnson was born August 4, 1923, the son of Chester and Frances (Ryan) Johnson in Rochester, MN. He was raised and educated in Scranton, ND, graduating from high school in 1941. Charles enlisted in the US Air Force on April 8, 1943. He proudly served his country during WWII as a Radar Mechanic GCA in the South Pacific and in Japan. He was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star. He was honorably discharged on February 27, 1946. He attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and graduated with a BSC Degree in Commerce in 1949. While attending UND he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Charles married Elaine Kopecky on August 8, 1952, in Grand Forks. They made their home in Grand Forks, where he was employed as an underwriter from 1949-57 with Implement Dealers Mutual Insurance Company. In 1957, he started a career in insurance and real estate with Central Investment, Inc., in Minot until 1975, after which he was an independent real estate broker. Charles and Elaine spent many summers enjoying their cabin on McKay Island at Lake Metigoshe with their family. Charles hobbies included following his grandkids activities, hunting, reading and playing cards. Charles was a member of First Lutheran Church, American Legion, VFW, Elks, Masonic Bodies, Shrine Club, Minot Board of Realtors, ND State Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, Insurance Federation of ND, City Planning Commission, Chairman of the Military Affairs Committee for the Chamber of Commerce, Past-President of the Minot Board of Realtors, the ND Association of Realtors, and the Minot Exchange Club. He was well known for his sense of fashion - tan, tan, or brown and always with a hat! He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elaine of Minot; son: Alan Johnson of Sugar Land, Texas; daughters: Gail (Mike) Merck and Susan (Lonnie) Heth, both of Minot; grandchildren: Jason, and Stefanie Merck; Megan, and Andrew Heth; sister: Nancy (Jack) Nichols of Saratoga, CA; sister-in-law: Juanita Johnson of Rapid City, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, William G. Johnson; and an infant sister, Ava Johnson.
