Darold D. Jessen 1929- 2006


Darold D. Jessen, 76, 1425 9th St SW, Minot, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 in Trinity hospital, surrounded by his family after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Darold was born on August 15, 1929, the son of Reuben and Christine (Neve) Jessen, in Niobe, ND. The family moved to Kenmare, ND in 1942. Darold attended Kenmare High School, participating in baseball and basketball, graduating in 1947.

Following graduation, he moved to Stanley, ND, where he managed the Red Owl Grocery store. It was here that he met and married Carol Harstad on July 11, 1950.

He entered the United States Army on July 19, 1951. He proudly served his country, receiving the Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars, United Nations Medal and the ROK Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged on July 8, 1953.

Upon his discharge, he managed the Red Owl in Bottineau. In 1955, he moved his family to Minot, and managed the South Hill Red Owl. Darold purchased and operated the Downtown Red Owl from 1972 to 1984. At the time of his death, he was managing the AAA Mini Storage Company.

Darold was an avid Minot State Beaver and class B basketball fan. He also enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He loved golfing, fishing and working in the yard. Darold also enjoyed following his grandchildren's sporting events. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

He is survived by: His wife, Carol, Minot; son: Dennis (Cheryl) Jessen, Westhope, ND; daughters: Jacky Sande, Minot, ND; Debbie (Steve) Bakke, Minot, ND; six grandchildren: Jamey Jessen, Mandy Johnson, Alyssa Iverson, Kelly Sande, Ryan Bakke, Tyler Bakke; five great grandchildren; brothers: Ted Jessen, Beach, ND, Lavern Jessen, Dickinson, ND, Jim Jessen, Montana and Bruce Jessen, Dickinson, ND; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Derek Sande and sister Allene Halabak

Visitation: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 from noon until 7:00 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Funeral Service: Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Augustana Lutheran Church, Minot

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
