Bertha "Bert" Miller James, 87, passed away peacefully at the Kenmare Hospital on December 25, 2007, Christmas Day.

Bert Miller was born October 2, 1920 in Minot, ND, the daughter of Martin and Inger (Gunderson) Miller. Bertha grew up on a farm south of Parshall, ND. She graduated from Parshall High School in 1937. She attended State Normal School in Minot, ND for 2 years earning a teaching certificate. Bertha taught school in rural North Dakota for 4 years-3 years in a one room school. She then moved to Minneapolis and worked in a defense plant; she was our own "Rosie the Riveter."

On December 1, 1944 she married Gordon W. James who was serving in the U. S. Navy at that time. They farmed east of Kenmare for 36 years. In 1982 they moved to Kenmare.

Bert was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church serving the church in many ways; American Legion Auxiliary, P. E. O. and the Baptist Home Auxiliary. Bert was concerned about others and did her part to help make the community a better place. She was always there for family and friends alike until the last several years when she struggled with Alzheimer's disease.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Phyllis (Richard) Winter, Sun Prairie, WI; Rhonda Huesgen, Santa Barbara, CA; a son: Ben (Robin) James, Kenmare; 4 grandchildren: Robin (Dave) Fee, Portland, OR: Melissa Huesgen, Portland, OR; Nathan (Annette) Novak, Waterloo, WI; Rachel Novak, Milwaukee, WI; 3 great-grandchildren: Elliott and Suzanna Fee; Jens Novak, as well as nieces and nephews.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Gordon in 1995; two brothers, Charlie and Gervase.

Visitation: Friday, December 28, 2007 from 3-6 p.m. in the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare

Funeral Service: Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, ND

Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare

Memorials to the Kenmare Hospital and the Baptist Home Auxiliary in Kenmare would be preferred.
