Oscar Isakson 1915 - 2006

Oscar Isakson, 91, Minot, formerly of Upham, ND, died Thursday, November 30, 2006, in a Minot nursing home.

Oscar was born on May 30, 1915, in rural Upham, ND, the son of Olaf and Ella (Nelson) Isakson. He was reared and educated in Layton Township, ND. Oscar worked on the family farmstead and later signed up for the Civilian Conservation Corp where he worked from 1935 to 1936 at the North Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt State Park building roads. Oscar later worked for various farmers and then for McHenry County building roads.

Oscar entered the United States Army Air Force on December 21, 1942, serving during World War II. He attended flyers, engine mechanic and gunnery school, and was stationed in England, and flew 31 missions over enemy territory. Oscar was honorably discharged from the United State Army Air Force on May 5, 1945 and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, air medal with three oak leaf clusters and a Battle Star for Air Offensive Europe. After his discharge, he moved back to the Upham area where he raised cattle did grain farming and mechanic work. Oscar worked for Hutton in Towner and then worked at the Minot Air Force Base as a mechanic for 10 years. Oscar enjoyed assisting neighbors, family and friends with anything mechanical. Oscar moved to Minot in 1996.

Survivors: brother, Alfred Isakson, Minot; sisters, Sophie Coyle, Lincoln, NE, Minnie Gwiazdzinski, New York, NY, and Doris Allen, ElMonte, CA; numerous nieces, nephew, cousins and grand nieces and nephews . He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Florence Isakson, Anna Thompson and Viola Norris.

Funeral Service: Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Fuenral Home, Minot.

Visitation: Monday, December 4, 2006, from Noon until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial: Little Deep Cemetery, rural Upham, ND.
