Dale J. Irwin 1931- 2011

Dale Irwin PhotoDale J. Irwin, 79, of Bismarck, formerly of Velva, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2011, in a Bismarck hospital.

Dale Jerome Irwin was born September 21, 1931, at his grandmother Quammen’s house in Velva. He was the son of Jonathon and Clara (Quammen) Irwin.  He was raised and educated in Velva, graduating from Velva High School in 1949. 

Dale served in the U.S. Army in the 472nd Battalion, Company 3, from 1952 until 1954 when he was honorably discharged. 

Following his honorable discharge, he then attended the University of North Dakota receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in 1958 and his Master’s Degree in Accounting in 1959.

He then moved to northern Minnesota, where he was employed by United States Steel Company. In 1966, he moved to California where he owned and operated an accounting company with his partner, Tim Coffie.  Dale had been a licensed CPA in California and North Dakota. He retired in 2004.

He was once married to the former Carol Wagner of Minot. To this union, two children were born, Cindy and Jeff.  

In 1977, he married Lois (Holte) Berry. They made their home La Habra, California, until he retired. While in La Habra, they were both involved in various organizations and enjoyed traveling. 

In 2004, they moved back to Velva, and were especially happy to be “back home.” Dale enjoyed sharing his whistling talents and entertaining at various nursing homes and care centers.

In 2007, Lois and Dale moved to Bismarck to be closer to Dale’s heart doctor.  There, they attended the McCabe Methodist Church, where they made many friends and met many friendly people.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #39 of Velva, the Hjerdahl Lutheran Church at Voltaire, and was an avid Velva Aggies fan.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lois;  daughter, Cindy Irwin of Lacey, Wash.;  step-son, Jeff (Karen) Berry of Dallas, TX;  brother, Gene (Janice) Watne of Velva;  sisters, Lois Lubiens of Fullerton, ND, and Sylvia (Eldon) Heidelbaugh of Rugby;  step-grandson, Chris Leiva, and his children, Katrina, Lee, and twins, Shai and Jennison, of Williston and Minot; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; son, Jeff; brothers, Warren and John; sisters, Betty, Marion, and Clara Jean; step-daughter, Nancy (Berry) Leiva.

Memorial service: Saturday, September 10, 2011, 10:30 AM, at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, ND

:  Private burial will take place at a later time

:  Friends may sign the register one hour before the service.

are preferred to the Hjerdahl Lutheran Cemetery Fund, Voltaire, ND, or to the Velva Ambulance Service.
