Mary Adaline "Addie" Humphreys 1913- 2011

Mary Humpreys PhotoMary Adaline Humphreys, 98, best known as “Addie” to her family and friends, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon, ND. She had been residing at Trinity Homes in Minot, but due to flooding concerns for residents at Trinity Homes, she was moved to the Langdon facility.

She was born July 24, 1913, in Hingham, MT, a daughter of Earl J. and Margaret (Kinsella) Becwar. She was raised and educated in Havre, MT, until age twelve when she moved with her family to Minot. She continued her education in Minot schools, graduating from Minot High School in 1931. She attended the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, and Minot State University, formerly known as Minot State College.

She married Daniel F. Humphreys July 17, 1939, at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Minot where they established their home. They raised six children who attended the Minot Catholic Schools where she and Dan spent many volunteer hours. Following the death of her husband, she continued to reside in Minot.

Addie was a beloved figure in Minot. For twenty years, she worked at Walter’s Women’s Wear, a clothing store for women on Main Street downtown. Women of a certain age came to know her well for her assistance in clothing purchases. As they carried on during fittings in the dressing room, Addie always said that outfit is “perfect for you.” Customers returned often to the store because of Addie and her delightful manner.

She loved her children unconditionally and praised them often. They were every mother’s ideal, she said. She could not get over her good fortune in having such wonderful children.

Always active in the Minot Catholic community where two of her brothers served as parish priests, she had been a member of both Little Flower and St. Leo’s churches, and of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She played a lot of bridge and volunteered many hours at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Surviving are her son, Daniel P. (Karen) Humphreys, Minot; daughters, Patricia Humphreys, Minot, Mary Joan (Charlie) Schoolcraft, Gooding ID, Susan Coates-Mallory, Windsor, CO, Diane (Terry) Holzer, Billings, MT, and Mary (Richard) Loken, Rochester, MN; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Jannie Miller, California; sister-in-law,
Mary Freuen of Spokane Wash; a number of nieces and nephews.
