Leonard Hummel 1927 - 2011

Leonard Hummel PhotoLeonard Hummel, 83, Minot, ND, died Monday, January 10, 2011, in his home.

Leonard Leland Hummel was born on April 28, 1927, to Anna and Adolph (Flath) Hummel on a farm near Coleharbor, ND. He attended a country school, but left after 8 years to help with the family farm.

Leonard joined the US Army at age 17 and was subsequently stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He married his high school sweetheart, Ida Dorothy Reimann, on November 14, 1948. They lived in Garrison, ND for 6 years where he worked as a mechanic at Wretlings. Four children; Adrian, Victoria, and the twins, Clifford and Claudia were born in Garrison. Leonard and Ida moved to Minot in 1954 where Julie, their fifth child, was born.

In 1959, he formed his own business, Hummel’s Bee Line. He and Ida ran a successful company for many years and, as teenagers, both Adrian and Cliff worked with their father as well. Hummel’s Bee Line permanently moved to 20th Ave SW. In 1973, their present home was built just east of Minot. Leonard and Ida continued to reside there after they retired Hummel’s Bee Line in 1987. After 61 years of marriage, Ida passed away on January 23, 2010.

Leonard always had an interest in old cars and took great pride in his 1948 Chevy and 1963 Cadillac. His Chevy won many awards and was part of several parades in the area. Leonard was a member of the Magic City Antique Car Club and the American Legion. Leonard was a self-taught artist who created intricate cars, trucks, small houses and barns out of wood. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing at the lake with his wife, Ida, and playing cards with her in the evenings. Leonard will be remembered for his sense of humor for he was known to say, “If I wasn’t grumpy, I’d have no personality at all.”

Leonard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ida; daughter, Victoria; parents, Anna and Adolph Hummel; and brother-in-law, Floyd Reimann.

Leonard is survived by his family: children, Adrian Pierce, Clifford Hummel, Claudia Lamaster and Julie Trader; grandchildren, Tobias Trader, Jeanie Trader, Nate Trader and Jason Trader; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Santiva, TC, and Bradley; his sister, Willa Butler;and sisters-in-law, Joyce Falkenstein, Doris Hart, and Verine Reimann.
