Harold Howard 1925 - 2011
Harold James Howard was born July 8, 1925, a son of Ernest and Caroline (Schmidt) Howard, in rural Velva, ND. He was raised in the rural Velva/Ruso area and attended country schools in the area. Harold enlisted in the United States Army May 25, 1944. He proudly served his country during WWII and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged April 26, 1946. Harold married Verna Westman November 7, 1947, in Max, ND. They lived in various places throughout North Dakota, due to Harold working various construction jobs. In the early 1950’s, they made their home in Minot. He continued to work several area jobs until 1959, when he became co-owner of City Plumbing & Heating in Minot. In 1974, they moved to Sawyer, ND, where they resided until 2009, when they returned to Minot. Harold retired from his business in 1990. He was a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Brethren Church in Minot, where he served as an usher for several years. He was an avid fisherman, loved to garden with his wife, Verna, and enjoyed taking care of his yard and apple trees. His loving family includes: wife of 63 years, Verna, Minot; sons, Joel (Rochelle) Howard, Sawyer, Dale (Cynthia) Howard, Hazen, ND, and Kevin (Janet) Howard, Minot; daughters, Irene Howard, Minot, Bonnie (Kerry) Stone, Minot, and Christine (Norlynn) Olson, Karlsruhe, ND; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Arnold (Leona) Howard, Fairview, MT; sisters, Mildred Herda, Kongsberg, ND, and Carol (Richard) Cogdill, Lonetree, ND; and numerous nieces, and nephews.
