Alta L. Hove 1922- 2010

Alta Hove PhotoAlta L. Hove, 88, Minot, formerly of Ryder, died Sunday, November 7, 2010 in a Minot nursing home.

Alta Louise Meyer was born February 19, 1922 to Alma and Gustav Meyer in Ryder, ND.   Alta attended school in Ryder for 12 years.  After graduation, she started in the nursing program at Trinity.

She married Walter Hove, Oct. 19, 1941.  Alta had been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ryder until it closed and then joined St John’s Lutheran Church.  Alta belonged to the Ryder Homemakers Club and later the Busy Bees Homemakers.    Alta organized a girl’s 4-H club and girls’ softball when her girls were young.

She managed distribution of commodities in the Ryder area for years.  She had served as chairman of the Minot Commission on Aging, and served as past President of the Ward County Senior Citizens, the Ryder Happy Hours Senior Citizens, and Region II Senior Citizens.  Alta enjoyed traveling around the state, speaking and singing at senior citizen events.

Alta held the key to the Ryder Museum, providing her the opportunity to share the history that she knew about Ryder, to learn more about Ryder, and  in the process meet many people, whom  she continued to correspond with for years.  Alta was the news correspondent for the Ryder News, a job that gave her a reason to call and chat with others.  After Walt died in 1987, Alta’s van was often filled with ladies as they took in events in and around the Ryder area.

Alta and Walt loved to travel in their motorhome.  They lived in Arizona in the winter and could be found camping and fishing at Lake Sakakawea in the summer.  Whether at home, or on the road, her hands were always busy.  She loved to crochet and work on crafts.

Alta was a faithful follower and supporter of her grandchildren.  She tried to get to every event on the schedule from T-ball to volleyball, a concert, or presentation.  Alta always had goodies in the freezer when any of them stopped by for a visit.  Alta has been a very generous, giving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Those who shared in her life, son, Lorin Hove, Minot; daughters, Lenyce (Joe Wamsley) Simmons, Mandan, and Lerri (Gerald) Giffey, Minot; six grandchildren, Raquel (Alan Hayes) Hove, Lynn (Anissa) Hove, Broc (Amanda) Giffey, Allison Giffey, Beau (Rachel) Simmons and Wes Simmons; five great-grandchildren, Mariah, Haley, Weston, Madison and Hugh; several nieces and nephews.
