Maynard Duane Horntvedt, son of Lars & Jennie, was born March 21, 1928 and raised on the family farm Northwest of Columbus, North Dakota.   Maynard graduated from Columbus High School in 1946, and then spent a few months attending Minot Business College and working in home construction before he was drafted into the US Army.  He was inducted at Fort Snelling in St. Paul, MN in 1951 and served until 1953, including a tour in Korea as a Radio Operator. After the war, Maynard worked for Occident Grain Elevator in Columbus, then moved on to Burke Divide Electric Cooperative in 1957, retiring in 1983.  Through all this, Maynard was always able to keep farming a part of his life, which was his passion, and upon retirement was able to farm full time until October of 1998. 

In 1956 Maynard married Jane Ellen Koppelsloen and they raised three children.  They lived in Maynard Horntvedt newer photoColumbus and were very active in the church and community until moving to Minot in 2001.  Their family life included many fun trips fishing in Canada as well as traveling in the US, visiting relatives, friends and sightseeing.   Maynard was committed to community service and was active in several organizations including Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion, City of Columbus, and Lions Club.   Maynard had a long, happy tenure filling in for Santa Clause in NW North Dakota.  He loved “Ho Ho Ho-ing” his way through the Christmas season, bringing smiles to children of all ages.  

Maynard was preceded in death by his mother, Jennie (Kihle) Horntvedt, his father, Lars Horntvedt, his brothers Arthur and Howard, and sister Leona Guderjohn.  He is survived by his loving wife Jane, children Keith (Peggy) Horntvedt, Peggy Jo Grand, Angela (Brett) Baumann and 9 grandchildren; sisters  Clara Westerness, Muriel Cartwright, Arlene Beck, brothers Dennis and Lester; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral: 
Monday, October 11, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot, ND

Burial:  Pleasant Prairie Cemetery, rural Columbus, ND at 3 p.m.Those wishing to attend this service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 3 p.m.  There will be no formal procession. This service will be officiated by Rev. Phyllis Scroggins, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus.

Visitation:  Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family receiving guests to visit from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
