Dennis L. Horntvedt 1930 - 2011
Dennis L. Horntvedt, 80, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 19, 2011 in a Minot with his family at his side.
Dennis was born on July 30, 1930 on the family farm in Forthun Township, Burke County, North Dakota a son of Lars and Jennie (Kihle) Horntvedt. He attended Brookside Elementary School and graduated from Columbus High School in 1947.
In April of 1953, Dennis was united in marriage to Patricia Bourdeau at the Columbus Lutheran Parsonage. Four children were born to this union, two sons and two daughters.
He took over the operation of the family farm after the death of his father in December of 1953. From 1954 until 1958, he worked for Great Plains Supply Company in Columbus. In the fall of 1958, he went to work for the Truax Traer Coal Company at the Kincaid Mine as an office employee, a position he held until 1964. He then became a bin inspector for the USDA and a supervisor for F.H.A. for a number of years. Dennis performed all of these duties while continuing to operate the family farm.
Dennis was very active in numerous civic, agricultural and church organizations. He was a weather observer for 28 years. He was a sexton for the Pleasant Prairie Cemetery for 35 years and was a Forthun Township assessor for 40 years. He was a Lutheran Brotherhood Volunteer for many years and served as Treasurer for the NW Prairie Branch 8728. He was a 4-H leader for a number of years and his judging team won 1st place in cattle judging at the Valley City Winter Show. He was a member of Pleasant Prairie Lutheran Church until its merger with Trinity Lutheran Church, when he became a member of the merged congregation. He served on the church council, taught Sunday School and adult bible study and sang in the church choir. In 1988, he transferred his membership to Faith Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, sang in the church choir and served as Secretary-Treasurer for 10 years. He was a member of the Columbus Men’s Quartet for many years, singing for many funerals in the area. As a member of this quartet, highlights were singing for his brother Les’s ordination in June of 1963 and singing for a member of the quartet’s wedding. He also sang solos for many funerals and weddings in the area.
In 1995, he and Patricia purchased a home in Minot and spent the winter months there.
Music was a great part of Dennis’s life as well as his love for the land. He was devoted to his family and had a strong commitment to the church and to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Survivors: wife, Patricia of Minot; daughters, Deborah (Kevin) Wlodarski of Temperance, MI and Janine (Dan) Johannes of Underwood, ND; sons, Kent of Columbus, ND and Wayne (Kay Edwards) of Minneapolis, MN; four granddaughters, Andrea (Brian) Kalis, Kelly (Joshua) Mau and Marissa Horntvedt and Eden Johannes; two grandsons, Justin (Bethany) Hughes and Jordan (Aaron)Hughes; two great-granddaughters; Sophie Kalis and Lillie Kalis; brother, Rev. Lester (Dianna) Horntvedt of Rochester, MN; sisters Clara Westerness, Bismarck and Arlene (Doug) Beck of Minot and Murial Cartwright of Lynden, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Arthur, who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII, sister Leona Guderjohn and brothers Howard and Maynard.
Funeral: Monday, May 23, 2011 at 10 am at New Life Lutheran Church, Minot, ND
Visitation: Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 4 until 7 with a prayer service at 7 all at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot
Burial: Monday, at 3:00 pm at Pleasant Prairie Cemetery, Columbus, ND
In lieu of flowers, or memorials may be given to the charity of donors choice in Dennis’ memory or memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in memory of Dennis L. This service was postponed due to conditions at the cemetery.
Following the funeral service, everyone is invited to join the family for lunch and fellowship in the fellowship hall of the church.
