Donovan John "Sam"
Holter 1944 - 2004 Donovan John "Sam" Holter, 60, Bowbells, died Tuesday, September 14, 2004, in the Kenmare Hospital. Donovan was born June 1, 1944, in Minot, ND, to Donovan Holter and Leone Carlson Holter Aufforth. He was the stepson of Roelf Aufforth. He grew up on the family farm in rural Bowbells, attended school in Bowbells and graduated from Bowbells High School in 1962. He entered the United States Army following graduation and served from 1962 to 1965. Following his Army service he worked for Glen Johnson at the "Country Boy Truck Stop" and for various farmers in the area. He also drove semi over the road for Don Bergmeyer, Power Fuels, Bob King, and for the past twenty plus years for Bohl Trucking out of Bowbells. Don, known to many as Sam or Donnie, spent his leisure time playing cards and pool. He loved to drive semi and visit with people. In his younger years Sam played baseball. You could find him behind the batters plate in the catcher's position or out in the field. His love for baseball continued through out his life and you could find him in front of the TV watching a game when he was not on the road. He was a member of the Bowbells American Legion Post #127, and served as Post Commander from 1983 to 1985. He was also affiliated with United Methodist Church, Bowbells. Don is survived by brothers, Douglas (Glenys) Holter, Berthold, Rolf (Vickie) Aufforth, and Herman (Beth) Aufforth, all of Bowbells; sisters, Susan Watson, Sandy, Utah, and Tammy (Allen) Ryberg, Bowbells; numerous nieces, nephews and several aunts, uncles and cousins survive. Donovan was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, sister-in-law, Joann Luke Holter and niece, Kristi Jo Aufforth. Funeral: Saturday, September 18, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., at United Methodist Church, Bowbells, ND. Family prayer service: Saturday at 10:00 a.m., at United Methodist Church, Bowbells. Visitation: Saturday, one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial: Bowbells Cemetery, Bowbells, ND.
