Robert "Bob"
Holmes 1921 - 2009 Robert Lyle Holmes was born on May 8, 1921, a son of William and Bertha (Zvorack) Holmes in Moorhead, MN. Bob was raised in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1939. On April 28, 1942, Bob enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He proudly served his country as a machine gun crewman in the Asiatic Pacific area. He was honorably discharged on November 6, 1945. On July 20, 1947, Bob married his one true love, June Balfour. They made their home in Minot where Bob worked as a Switchman and later as a Retarder Operator for the Great Northern Railroad/Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1982. After his retirement Bob enjoyed serving as a Bailiff for the Ward County District Court. Bob was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church; a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, a member of the Masonic Lodge, Minot Shrine Club, and past president of the KEM Temple and a member of the Shrine Jesters. Bob was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW and Moose Lodge. Bob was a social member of the Minot Retriever Club. Bob's survivor family includes: Son Kim (Nancy) Holmes;
two grandchildren Melissa Holmes and Tyler Holmes all of Minot:
sisters in law; Alice Michaels, Minot; Audrey Balfour, Arizona; Bob enjoyed life to the fullest every day. His joys in life were his family and his two grandchildren, Missy and Tyler. Bob valued his many friendships throughout the years and was passionate in serving the needs of children at the Shriner's Hospital through efforts of the Minot Shrine Club and the annual Shrine Circus. Bob loved spending time with his family. His fondest memories were trips to the lake with Kim, Nancy, Missy and Tyler and spending time with Alice "Antie", Mark Michaels, Becky, Kara & Katie at their lake home in Minnesota; or poolside with Tom Michaels and family in Arizona. Bob was a gentle, kind, caring man. The imprint Bob has left in the hearts of his family and friends is that of an amazing, remarkable man whose priceless gift of generosity and love will be remembered always. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife June, two sisters, Grace and Helen and two brothers Howard and Ray. The family wished to thank all the physicians, nurses, pastoral care and all staff at Trinity Hospital and Trinity Homes for the immeasurable compassion and caring. Visitation: There will be no reviewal, however, friends may sign a register book on Thursday, February 12, 2009 from 2 until 7 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot Memorial Service: Friday, February 13, 2009 at 2 pm at the All Saints Episcopal Church, Minot Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot The family prefers memorials to the Minot Shrine Club or Trinity Hospice, Minot. Officiant: The Rev. George Slanger Music Honorary Bearers: Members of Minot Shrine Club Active Bearers: Mark Michaels, Troy Rauschenberger, Mike Common, Paul Simonson Military honors accorded by the ND Army National Guard with taps by Dorothy Pence, Minot American Legion. Immediately following the memorial service there will be lunch
and fellowship in the lower level of the church. The Holmes family would like to thank everyone for the many
acts of kindness shown to them during this difficult time. A
special thank you goes to the staff at Trinity Homes, Trinity
Hospital and Trinity Hospice for the care shown to Bob in recent
