David Holmes 1949 - 2011 David John “Beaner” Holmes was born on May 30, 1949, a son of Wayne and Norma (Schiele) Holmes in Rugby, ND. David attended grade school in Berwick, graduating from Towner High School. He furthered his education attending the Bottineau School of Forestry culminating a lifelong love of Botany and the outdoors. He loved gardening, especially his Dinner Plate Dahlias and his State Fair Zinnias. On May 23, 1972, David was united in marriage to Kathleen Ann Hancock. They lived in Rugby, Towner and Berwick, finally making their home in Karlsruhe in 1978. For 27 years, David worked for the BNSF. Prior to working for the railroad, he worked for Hutton Construction. David was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing if all kinds. He was a history buff and extremely well versed in the Civil War and WWII. He enjoyed reading, challenging games such as Jeopardy and Scrabble, and never missed the daily crossword puzzle. David was an expert in building model WWII ships, submarines and tanks. He loved spending time with his family, especially his only granddaughter Kyra Daye. He is survived by: Wife: Kathy, Karlsruhe, ND; Daughter: Heather (David) Springer, granddaughter Kyra Daye Springer, all of Rochester, MN; mother Norma Holmes, Rugby, ND; sister: Nancy (Gordon) Burns, Jacksonville, FL; brothers: Steven (Shelly) Holmes, Parshall, ND, Bruce (Renee) Holmes, Leeds, ND; grand-dogs: Ruby and Tuesday, Rochester, MN; Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. David was preceded in death by his father Wayne Holmes, paternal grandparents Ethel and Harold Holmes, maternal grandparents Amanda and John Schiele. Visitation: Thursday, March 31, 2011 from 3-6 at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot with a prayer service at 6 pm in the chapel. Funeral Service: Friday, April 1, 2011 at 10:30 am at. Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe Following the funeral service, cremation will take place. Immediately following the funeral service, everyone is invited to join the family for lunch and fellowship in the lower level of the church.
