John Holbach 1904 - 2008 John Nicholas Holbach was born September 21, 1904, a son of Peter and Margaret (Frost) Holbach on the Holbach farmstead. His parents were among Minot's earliest residents, having settled on a 240-acre farm five miles southeast of Minot, where they lived in a two story log house. John was raised on the family farmstead and was baptized and confirmed at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot. He was educated at Nedrose School. As a young man, he assisted his parents with the operation of the family farm. John married Margaret McNamara June 21, 1933, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Van Hook, ND. They made their home on a farm located two miles southwest of Minot. Together they farmed small grains and raised dairy cows. They resided on the farm until 1960, when they built the Casa Motel on the land that they owned. They resided there until 1968, when they moved one of the original homes in Minot to their farm land. They continued to reside there until July of 2008, when John moved into ManorCare. He was an active member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, where he served as an usher, was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4894 and was also a member of the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed planting his garden, planting trees, and watching them grow. He also enjoyed surveying the yearly crops, fishing, and playing cards, especially Whist. Surviving family includes: wife of 75 years, Margaret, Minot; daughters, Julane (Dick) Matejovsky, Polson, MT, Eileen Larson, Las Cruces, NM, and Marietta Clemens, Crosby, ND; son, Larry (Marilyn Lawler Holbach) Holbach, Minot;15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; sisters, Esther Ruelle, Minot, Lucy Meyer, Avon, MN, and Dorothy Cooper, Boyton Beach, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; sons-in-law, Thad Larson and Larry Clemens; brother, Frank Holbach; sisters, Bertha Holbach and Helena Twite; sister-in-law, Ruth Holbach; brothers-in-law, Jack Twite, Bill Ruelle, Jerome Meyer, and James Cooper.
