Lorraine L. Hoiland • 1923 - 2006 Lorraine was born May 10, 1923 on a farm north of Surrey to Martin and Ella (Barsness) Ofsthun. She was the youngest of nine children and received her education at a one-room school house near the family home. She married Odin Hoiland on August 24, 1940 in Great Falls, MT. When they married Odin was in the United States Navy during World War II. They lived in Great Falls, Montana, Port Orchard, Washington and Snoqualme, Washington. They had four children and moved back to North Dakota in the early 1950's. Odin built homes in Minot and later opened Hoiland's Floor Service on Highway 2 East, Minot. This building was later remodeled and added on to house the Sunrise Motel, that Lorraine and Odin owned and operated for many years. They enjoyed the business and many of the people that stayed at their motel became good friends. They had a lake cabin at Crooked Lake and later at Pick City. Many family gatherings were held there and the couple spent much time fishing at Lake Sakakawea. Odin died August 19, 1989. Lorraine spent time with her sisters as they aged and was a caregiver for several ladies in the Minot area. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Eagles Auxiliary, and the V.F.W Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, baking and always welcomed visitors to her home. As her illness progressed, she became a resident at Sue Byre's adult foster home near Minot and then the Good Samaritan Center in Mohall. Survivors: Lorraine is survived by her children, Jerry (Nancy) Hoiland, Minot, Norman (Noreen) Hoiland, Minot, Gloria (Walt) Gay, Bothell, WA, and Richard (Ellen) Hoiland, Forest Lake, MN. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Brent, Becky and Brooke Hoiland, Jay Hoiland, Renae Odegaard, Shawn Gay, Shannon Perrigoue, Aaron and Sarah Hoiland and six great-grandchildren; brothers, Woody Ofsthun, Gig Harbor, WA, and Eugene Ofsthun, Mesa, AZ; sister, June Erickson, Mohall; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Odin; brothers, Oliver and Roy Ofsthun; sisters, Edna Lee, Blanche Finneseth and Fern McNabb. Funeral: Friday, December 29, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. Visitation: Thursday, December 28, 2006 from noon to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial: Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Trinity Hospice, Bethany Lutheran Church, both in Minot or the charity of your choice.
