Luther P. Hoffner was born on July 19, 1939, a son of Luther A.M. and Elizabeth M. (Edge) Hoffner in East Stroudsburg, PA. He was raised and educated in PA.

On June 10, 1962, he was united in marriage to Carol J. Fox in Saylorsburg, PA. Luther was in the Unites States Army from 1962 until 1967 and United States Air Force from 1971-1991. They were stationed at numerous cities, including: Fort Knox, KY, Ulm, Germany, Fort Lewis, WA, Caribou, ME, Okinawa, Japan, Grand Forks, ND, Plattsburg, NY, Minot, ND, Frankfurt, Germany and back to Minot, in 1988. On June 30, 1991, he was honorably discharged.

Throughout his military career, Luther earned the numerous service medals, Meritorious Service medal, Air Force Commendation medal w/bronze oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation medal, Distinguished Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit award w/2 bronze oak leaf clusters, Air Force good conduct medal w/silver and bonze oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal w/Bronze star, Vietnam Service medal w/2 bronze oak leaf clusters, Air Force overseas long tour ribbon w/bronze oak cluster, Air Force longevity service award ribbon w/silver Oak Leaf cluster, NCO PME ribbon, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship ribbon, Air Force training ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal.

Following his discharge, Luther and Carol remained in Minot. Luther attended Minot Sate University, obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Social Work. Carol died July 5, 2001. He continued to live in Minot, where he was a volunteer for Trinity Homes.

Luther was a member of the Veterans Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Club. He will be greatly missed.

Those who shared in his life:  Sons: Luther Hoffner Jr., Minot, Jesse (Allison) Hoffner, all of Minot; grandchildren: Branden, Chelsey, Amanda, Amber, and McKenzie; siblings Bill (Karen) Hoffner, Bud (Bonnie) Hoffner, Joe (Helen) Hoffner, Don (Linda) Hoffner and sister Joyce (Bruce) Gower, all of PA.Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Luther was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carol.  

Visitation: Wednesday, November 11, 2009 from noon until 6 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Funeral Service: Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 10 am in Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot

Burial: Thursday at 3 pm at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

The graveside service will take place Thursday at 3 pm at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 3 pm. There will be no formal procession.

The Hoffner family would like to thank everyone for the many acts of kindness shown to them during this difficult time. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten. May God bless the memory of Luther P. Hoffner Sr.
