Tilda Hjelmstad 1913- 2006
Tilda Hjelmstad, 92, Minot, formerly of Glenburn, North
Dakota, died peacefully on July 1, 2006, in a Bismarck nursing
home.
Tilda was born on September 8, 1913, on the family farm near
Wolseth, North Dakota, the daughter of John and Oline (Wolseth)
Harstad. She was raised and educated there and graduated from
Wolseth High School.
She completed teacher education training at Minot State Teachers
College and taught school in the Hiddenwood School District near
Ryder, North Dakota. She met Arnold Hjelmstad who was employed
at the grain elevator in Ryder. They were married on April 8,
1939, at the Nidaros Lutheran Church, Wolseth, ND.
In 1948, they moved to Glenburn where Arnold became manager of
the Glenburn Farmers Union Elevator. Tilda served as bookkeeper
for the elevator for many years. She also served as Secretary
for the Glenburn School District, working with four different
school superintendents. Arnold died on December 5, 1995.
Tilda was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenburn,
Lutheran Church Women, and a charter member of the Glenburn Senior
Citizens. Tilda and Arnold spent summers of their retirement
years at their lake cabin in New Town. She moved to Minot in
1995, where she resided at Dakota Terrace Apartments and to Bismarck
in 2002, when she entered the Missouri Slope Nursing Home.
Tilda is survived by daughter Meredith Henry and her husband
Roy of Ellisville, Missouri; son Terry Hjelmstad and his wife
Gail of Minot; daughter Janet Thompson of North Olmsted, Ohio;
son Jerry Hjelmstad and his wife Laura of Bismarck; brother Alfred
Harstad and his wife Violet of Minot; sister Benda Sveen of Minot;
sister Lillian Sorensen and her husband Hans of Fargo; 11 grandchildren,
9 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arnold, brothers
Arnold and Johnnie Harstad, and sisters Luella Herman, Hilma
Hughes, Olga Mothershead, and Manda Ofsthun.
Visitation: Friday, July 7, 2006 from noon until 7:00
p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Prayer Service: Friday, July 7, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at
the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.
Funeral Service: Saturday, July 8, 2006 at 1:00 p.m.
at Trinity Lutheran Church
Burial will be at the Glenburn Cemetery
