Alpha Marie Hills 1920 - 2009

Alpha Marie Hills, 88, passed away Thursday morning, June 11, 2009, in a Minot medical center. Formerly of Granville and more recently of Williston; Mrs. Hills had been a resident of Bethel Lutheran Home since December of 2005.

Alpha Marie Lovro was born on December 9, 1920 at Bonetrail, ND to Hans and Oline (Haseth) Lovro. On December 20th of that year, she was baptized into the Lutheran Faith. She was confirmed Lutheran at Scandia Lutheran Church on September 17, 1933. She completed grade school at Scandanavia No 43 School (Williams County) in a class of five students. Her family moved to the Granville area to escape the dry conditions. Alpha was always a good speller. She taught herself to type while employed at Northwest Medical Clinic in Minot. She also worked at the City Bakery in Minot. She then met Lyle Hills who had just returned from the Navy. They were married on January 30, 1947. In April, they moved to a farm near Granville in Egg Creek Township, where they made their home for over 50 years. Lyle and Alpha were very interested in Soil Conservation. They were awarded the North McHenry County Soil Conservation Award.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Granville and the Ladies Aid. She was a longtime member of the Alfalfameade Homemaker's Club. Alpha also was actively involved in 4-H, and was a leader of the Egg Creek Girls club for 8 years. For many years, she served as treasurer of Egg Creek Township.

Alpha enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, quilting, canning and especially gardening. One summer she planted 165 gladiolus bulbs. She also enjoyed her walks and farm living. In later years, Lyle and Alpha spent the winters in Minot. Lyle passed away in December of 1997.

In November of 1999, she moved next door to her daughter in Williston. During the summer, she particularly liked going to the concerts in the park and working in her flower beds. While in Williston, she attended Our Redeemers' Lutheran Church. She made cards at the Williston Heritage Senior Center. She particularly enjoyed the concerts in the park during the summer and her flowers.

Alpha was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. Family was very important to her. She will be dearly missed.

Alpha is the mother of daughters, Linda (Loren) Haugen, Williston, LeRae (Thomas) Schnickel, Littleton, CO; son, Larry (Kristine) Hills, Fairfax, MN; grandchildren, Luke and Santiago Schnickel, Littleton, CO, Hannah Hills, Fairfax, MN, Heidi (Jason) Ulland, Williston, Dr. Mark (Kelli) Haugen, Walla Walla, WA, and Lori Haugen, Portland, OR; great-grandchildren, Ashly and Aric Ulland, Williston, Ethan, Samuel, Sophia, and Lilly Haugen, Walla Walla, WA; sisters, Mabel Hoff, Williston, Helga Cross, Granville, and Olga (Ingvald) Odland; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; granddaughter, Grace Maria Hills; brother, Justin Lovro; and parents, Hans and Oline Lovro.

Funeral Service: Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 11:00 am at First Lutheran Church in Granville.

Visitation: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 from noon-7:00 at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Prayer Service: Tuesday at 7:00 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot

Burial: Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 2 pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

Immediately following the funeral service there will be lunch and fellowship in the lower level of the church.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:00 pm. There will be no formal procession.

The Hills family would like to thank everyone for the many acts of kindness shown during this difficult time. Friends, those wonderful people who mean so much to everyone in life, were especially important to Alpha. Our family wishes to express our appreciation to you for the friendship and to thank you for the many kindnesses and love you have demonstrated to us now at the time of her passing.

A special thank you to the loving staff of the Bethel Lutheran Home for making mom a part your family and helping us with her journey with Alzheimers. At a time when we needed strength most, you were there to help. May God bless the memory of Alpha.

Thank you also to the sixth floor nursing staff at Trinity Health for the loving care you gave to mom and our family during her final days. We shall never forget you. God bless the wonderful work you do.
