Howard Herberg PhotoHoward Herberg, 88, Bismarck, ND, formerly of Minot ND, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2011, at the Medcenter One Mandan Living Center.

Howard Forrest Herberg was born November 20, 1923, a son of Clarence and Hilda (Lund) Herberg, on a farm near Crosby, ND. He was raised on the family farm and educated at a rural country school in the area. He graduated from Crosby High School in 1942.

Following his high school graduation, he assisted his parents with the operation of the family farm.

Howard enlisted in the United States Navy May 27, 1944. He proudly served his country during World War II, serving on the U.S.S. Birmingham which was heavily damaged in combat near Okinawa. He was honorably discharged June 9, 1946.

Following his honorable discharge, he worked various jobs including Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, WA.

Howard married Bernice R. Sandberg December 23, 1950, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby. They made their home in Williston, ND, where he worked as an apprentice electrician for Gardener Electric. He later worked for Triangle Electric in Williston for several years. It was through this job experience that he became a journeyman electrician. He was conservative in his approach to life and a perfectionist with his work and his cars. His wiring was textbook perfect and he taught his children to strive for excellence in all things.  His strong work ethic was passed down to his children and grandchildren. Howard moved his family to various cities in conjunction with being a journeyman electrician. He retired in 1985 to spend more time with Bernice, his children, and grandchildren.

In 2011, they moved to Bismarck to be closer to their son, Lee, after they lost their home and many of their possessions to the Souris River Flood.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Minot, where he volunteered with their booth at the Norsk Hostfest and the ND State Fair. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #753, and the American Legion Post # 26, all of Minot. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local 714, and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge where he achieved the 32nd degree.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and playing pinochle and whist. Howard was a “card shark” and a shrewd player. He spent countless hours playing cards with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed golfing and was fortunate on three separate occasions to score a hole-in-one during his retirement years.
