Adam was born on April 26, 1914, in Mandan, ND, the last son of Frank and Veronica (Brucker) Hecker. Adam was a third generation German from Russia. He was raised in Mandan and attended school there until the end of his sophomore year when he began employment of a bottler at the Mandan Beverage Co. Adam worked in a succession of jobs for the Nash Finch Company, a wholesale food distribution corporation, as a warehouseman, city deliverer, truck driver and salesman. He worked much of the North Central part of the state. During this time the family had grown to five children. They all attended St. Mary's Academy. In 1957, Adam was transferred to Minot, ND, with The Nash Finch Company. Several years later, Adam finished his working years as a custodian for the Minot Public School System. He was lifetime supporter of unionization of employment for workers. He enjoyed hunting upland game birds, duck, geese, and deer. He fished throughout his active life and was particularly fond of walleye. Dancing and listening to Lawrence Welk was also a lifetime pastime.
