Marie Haug 1911 - 2004

Marie Haug, 93, Granville, formerly of Deering, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, in a Minot Nursing Home.

Marie Haug was born February 28, 1911 in Hope, ND to Robert and Sophie (Dege) McLaughlin. She was raised in Hope and attended school there. She graduated from Jamestown College in 1932 with degrees in English, Social Science and French.

She taught in rural schools in Fingal, Enderlin, and Blaisdell ND. She also taught in Granville from the fall of 1939 until spring of 1941.

She married Philip Haug in Hope, ND on November 21, 1941. Following their marriage, the couple lived and farmed north of Deering all their married life.

Marie began teaching at Deering School in 1953. In addition to her teaching duties, which included English, History, Business, Music, Drama, and French, she served as Superintendent of Deering School from 1965 until her retirement in 1975.At that time she was one of two secondary school superintendents in the state of North Dakota who were female. She touched the lives of many students and families throughout her teaching career and she was everyone's 'favorite teacher.'

She was patient and kind and lived graciously among her family and friends.

After her retirement, she and Philip traveled extensively on both the east and west coasts, visiting her sisters and brother and their families. They also made several trips to Mississippi to visit their son and daughter-in-law and grandsons at Starkville. In 1976, they traveled to Europe, spending time in France, Italy and England. Philip died on September 12, 1991.

The last few years of her life have been spent living with her daughter at Granville, during which time she enjoyed spending time with both the Deering and Granville Senior Citizens.

She was a past member of the Granville Eastern Star, the Deering Congregational Church, the Moose Lodge, AAUW, (The American Association of University Women) Deering and Granville Senior Citizens, and the Hope Congregational Church of Granville.

She was much loved and will be sadly missed by her family which includes:Son, C. James Haug (Ruth), Starkville, MS, daughter, Judy Bacon, Granville, ND; grandsons, Stopher (Lauren) Haug, Marty (Rowan) Haug, Jimmy Haug, Kelly (Heidi) Bacon and Ryan(Michelle) Bacon; great grandchildren, Kelle D., Alexander, Michael, Xandria, Kaitlyn and Luke Bacon. Sisters: Jeannette McNaughton, Sacramento, CA; Lorraine (Ray) Johnson, Falls Church. VA; brothers: Bob (Joyce) McLaughlin, Sacramento CA, She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: Her husband, sisters, Helen and Ruth; Son-in-law Rodney Bacon.

Funeral: Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 11:00 am at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Minot.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Friday, noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Officiant: Rev. Donald Andrews, chaplain Trinity Health
