Wendell Ernest Haugen 1920- 2011

Wendell Haugen PhotoWendell Ernest Haugen, 90, Minot formerly of Ryder, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 in a Minot Assisted Living Facility.

Wendell Ernest Haugen was born June 8, 1920 in a two bedroom farmhouse in Roseglen Township, McLean County, ND, the son of Rudolph Nels and Lucinda (Pollert) Haugen.

He was reared and educated at Ryder, ND, where he graduated from High School in the class of 1938.  He worked with his father at the grain elevator and the local drugstore in Ryder.  He moved to Minot at the age of nineteen where he met his future bride, who was a nurse at Trinity Hospital.  Wendell and Frances M. Hatfield were united in marriage on June 29, 1941 at her parent’s home rural Navajo, Montana. They later established their home on a farm in Hiddenwood Township, rural Ryder, ND where they farmed for over fifty years.  In 1992, they moved into Minot and to Edgewood Vista in 2005.  Frances died March 11, 2006.

Wendell was a member of the Ryder Calvary Presbyterian Church, active in the Farmers Union, serving on local boards, the Ward County Board and the rural electrics.   1n 1970, he was elected to the Board of Verendrye Electric, elected to the ND Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives board for 13 years and later to the National Board retiring in March of 1986.    He was a past member of the Minot Golden “K” Club.

Wendell is survived by:
                                   Sons and daughters-in-law: Rodger Haugen, Devils Lake, ND
                                                                             Dennis and Jody Haugen, Wichita, KS
                                                                             Dale and Karen Haugen, Williston, ND

Seven grandchildren:    Jeffrey (Rosella) Haugen, Allison (Kyle) Ternes and Daniel Haugen
                                   Alicea Haugen
                                   James (Natasha), Douglas and Chelsea Haugen

Six great-grandchildren: Taylor, Alexis, Andrew and Trinity Ternes
                                     Hunter and Brekyn Haugen.

Two step-great-grandchildren:  Randle and Raissa  Abrahamson

Sister:  Selma and her husband, Kenneth Hopkins, Minot, ND    
               
Wendell is preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister, Bernice and daughter-in-law, Connie Haugen.

Funeral Service: First Presbyterian Church, Minot, ND on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 2 p.m.

Burial:  Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND

Visitation:  Tuesday,  Today,  January 18, 2011 from  2 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Officiant: Rev. Jonathan Starks, pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church, Ryder, ND
